16 sustainable fashion pieces to invest in this year

This week we're looking at sustainable 'slow' shopping - that is, buying investment pieces that will last us for years. Slightly more expensive but well-made and timeless, Bekki Ramsey finds out more.

Was one of your resolutions to bring in the ‘quality over quantity’ rule in your wardrobe? Or perhaps, you’re hoping to shop more sustainability?

Like grasping the concept of climate change, itself, learning to shop sustainably can feel like a daunting task.

Well, luckily for you, we’ve put together our top picks for what we believe are some of the most important products in your wardrobe –comfortable shoes, polished outerwear and of course, ‘nice tops’ to wear with your reliable jeans.

What’s more, we’ve even highlighted what exactly makes the product sustainable – but without all of the lingo.

So, scroll on through to see our top sustainable picks that are still fun and don’t break the bank.

Beautiful and timeless

Not only is this blouse 100% natural but it can be dressed up or down, and even tucked under jumpers in the winter, whilst teasing the beautiful collar.

Sexy and sustainable

Do you still want to feel sexy but sustainable at the same time? Well, this 100% silk top with a square neckline is your answer! What’s more, it’s also available in black.

100% silk at a great price

If you need a blouse that can see you through a day at the office through to drinks after work – then this is the silk wrap top for you. Not only is it 100% silk for such a bargain price but it’s also available in three other colours – black, white and pink – making it a staple in anyone’s wardrobe.

Timeless leopard print

For those that want to purchase investment pieces without giving up their love for prints, don’t worry – there are ways. Instead, think of the prints you go back to time and time again, such as leopard print, and buy high-quality pieces in this pattern. This GANNI blouse is the perfect example.

Recycled ‘boyfriend’ jeans

Available in two colours, the Mud ‘Boyfriend’ jeans should be in a staple in anyone’s capsule wardrobe. Not only are they made of 75% organic cotton but 23% is post-consumer recycled cotton.

Stylish and sustainable basic jeans

People Tree are known for selling some of the best sustainable basics out there so it’s no surprise that their new 100% organic cotton ‘Cecile’ straight jeans have received such recognition. The relaxed, straight silhouette has a cropped length, giving off a beautiful Parisian vibe.

Perfect white cotton jeans

Not only do are these jeans 98% organic cotton but they’ve been engineered for the perfect fit around the bum. What’s more, the denim used to create the jeans only has a slight touch of stretch – which means they never get baggy.

Top tip: Wear one size down for a tighter fit around the bum, or your true size for a more relaxed fit.

For skinny jean lovers

If you’re more of a skinny jeans’ wearer than a straight, then the ARMED ANGELS jeans are the perfect pair for you. They’re made of 92% organic cotton, 6% recycled polyester and 2% elastic.

Another good thing about these jeans? They’re available in four colours.

The classic trench

Is there a more classic coat than the trench? I would really beg to differ.

This one from Reformation is perfect as not only is it made of 97% cotton but it’s deceivingly warm due to the expensive lining.

We’ll take one in every colour

Nothing ties an outfit quite together than the perfect polished coat. And may I say that I have found it with this double-breasted ‘James’ coat from Sezane. It’s one of those coats that automatically makes you feel Parisian when you wear it, upping the level of your outfit by a notch.

And if you think you’ve already got too many black coats, luckily, it’s available in five colours – burgundy, two variations of a check and camel.

Puffa perfection

This perfect puffa is definitely worth the investment as it will last years. Made of 100% recycled down and feathers, this coat offers lightweight protection and insulation from the cold and rain, making it ideal for the winter weather in Britain.

Again, this is available in numerous colours – black and our personal favourite, green. Why not make a statement when wearing a sustainable coat?

Sustainable shades of grey

Understated but beautifully designed, this lined winter coat is ideal for those that are after a sophisticated purchase. Not only is the fabric of high-quality but it’s prettily adorned with mother-of-pearl buttons.

Timeless Western boots that will last you for years

Who said you can’t keep up with the latest fashion trends – such as cowboy boots – whilst being sustainable? Everlane has proved that you can with their ‘Western Boot’.

Available in three colours (black, white and brown), they are made of premium Italian leather meaning they’ll last for many years. Feel free to dress them up with skirts and dresses, or opt for a more casual look with your favourite jeans.

Trainers worth investing in

Let’s be honest. How many times have you bought shoes that are so uncomfortable that they just end up sitting in your shoe cupboard for months and months after one wear? Personally, I’ve done this more times than I would like to admit.

That’s why 2020 should be about investing in comfortable shoes without compromising on style. A perfect way of achieving this is through a classic white trainer, such as these from sustainable trainer maker, VEJA.

Hiking boots are here to stay

Holly Willoughby may have made them famous in 2018 with her slot on I’m a Celeb but hiking boots are here for the long run. With this in mind, it’s important to invest in a good quality pair. Not only will they keep your feet warm in the winter months, but they’ll automatically make any outfit look more expensive.

Honestly, try it. You won’t be disappointed.

A vegan take on a classic

Lastly, we have the classic Dr Marten Chelsea Boot but this time, we’re playing homage to the vegan version. Not only do these work well with skirts and dresses but they’re the most comfortable and classic shoe to wear with a pair of jeans.
