The Italian staple has spread its delicious heritage across the globe, with some of the tastiest slices hitting our high streets right here in the North East. Browse our list for some of our favourite pizza places in the region, but we warn you, pizza cravings are guaranteed!
An authentic Stefano Ferrara pizza oven, built in Napoli, reaches temperatures over 500°C – cooking delicious pizzas in just 60 seconds! Cal’s Own is a family-run business founded in 2012, with a relocation eight years ago to Jesmond. The pizzeria uses both traditional and modern techniques to make its tasty pizza slices, as well as importing classic Italian ingredients from the Campania of Italy. Prices start at £7.85 for a cheese and tomato base and up to £14.65 for the Calzone Napolitana special.

Scream for Pizza
Another authentic Neapolitan pizzeria but this time with a twist. The owners, Alex and Vicky, got their pizzaiolos training in Naples at the famous La Notizia pizzeria, so they put their heart and soul into creating epic flavours with surprising fusions from the world’s most favourite dishes.
One of the newest additions to Chillingham Road is the walk-in only Flint Pizza. Wood-fire ovens, with an open kitchen style bar, creates a lively atmosphere straight from the chefs. Owner Ben had a ‘eureka moment’ while holidaying in Budapest and wanted to recreate a little pizza shop serving Neapolitan pizza. The small and intimate restaurant is a romantic spot to enjoy unique flavoured pizzas made in the imported authentic pizza oven.
Central Oven and Shaker
A trend which you may have noticed is the Neapolitan theme which these fantastic North East pizzerias adopt, and Central Oven and Shaker is no different. This popular restaurant never fails to impress with its signature puffy and light edged base, smooth tomato base and fior di latte mozzarella. If that hasn’t convinced you to give this spot a try, how about 2-for-1 cocktails?
Take a break from the seaside fish and chips with this Northumberland coastal pizzeria located near Beadnell. Traditional Italian wood-fired ovens create authentic dough flavours, and creative toppings add that unique quality taste. Box’s owners pride their business on selecting the very best ingredients from local sources. Perched atop the hill in Swinhoe, expect gorgeous views across both farmland and the coast
A family-run, small pizzeria situated in the heart of Middlesbrough is another hot spot for pizza-lovers across the region. Sourdough-based authentic wood-fired pizzas take only 90 seconds to create that much-loved cheesy goodness. The dough is fermented for 72 hours to ensure maximum gluten chain breakdown and increase protein content.
Stable Hearth Pizzeria
The best pizza that Darlington has to offer, in our humble opinion! This restaurant is award-winning with the title of 2018’s English Italian Awards for ‘Best Pizzeria’. Stable Hearth first opened in 2013, and all of their pizzas get cooked in a third-generation family business oven purchased from Italy.
Elder and Wolf
Although this restaurant isn’t technically a pizzeria, it is nevertheless worthy of being on our best pizza spots list. The chefs at Elder and Wolf source all ingredients locally, and make their dishes fresh every day before cooking them in the fire. This cosy coastal spot won the award for the North East’s most relaxed restaurant, so another reason to head straight there.
A casual dining restaurant in Ouseburn, Gingerino’s makes delicious thing and crispy stonebaked pizzas made with the highest quality ingredients such as San Marzano D.O.P tomatoes, 00 pizza flour and fiore di latte cheese.
Each pizza is 14 inch, sold as quarter slices and are available on a great lunchtime deal with a drink and a cake (hello, Friday treat). They also sell garlic bread and mini calzones which are delicious. Prices from £2.50 a slice
