By Helen Buchan
A strong, well-functioning immune system is the cornerstone of good health, fighting off disease and infections and allowing you to recover more quickly if you do get sick.
The key to supporting immunity is to provide your body with a variety of foods that provide a natural abundance of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (compounds found in plants that have disease-fighting properties); all those nutrients work together to keep your immune functions running smoothly.
This immune-supporting breakfast smoothie provides:
A good balance of healthy carbs to protein, balancing blood sugar levels and keeping inflammation down in the body
Essential fats in the form of flaxseeds and almond butter to help your body absorb fat-soluble nutrients and to maintain good overall health and strong immunity.
Spinach and Kiwi fruit, both particularly high in Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant which can strengthen your body’s natural defences.
Serves 1
Ingredients:
1 tbsp ground flaxseed
1 tbsp almond butter
1 tsp maca powder
1 tbsp protein powder (wild berry or vanilla)
250ml coconut milk
2 handfuls spinach
1 ripe kiwi fruit, peeled
Method:
Place all the ingredients into a cup blender.
Blend until smooth.
Best eaten straight away, however, the ingredients can be packed together the night before for a quick blend in the morning.
