Tour of the North: 4 x Best Places to Vintage Shop

Just because Second-hand September is drawing to a close doesn’t mean your vintage shopping has to, so we’re sharing our four favourite places in the North East to grab a second-hand gem.

Second-hand September was created by Oxfam as challenge to get people to give up shopping for brand new clothes and accessories for 30-days throughout the whole of September, and instead doing their best to thrift, repair, swap and buy second-hand in order to prove that new items aren’t always necessary to help elevate our wardrobes.

Since we’re currently back in lockdown here in the North East, we know many of you will be limiting your time outside again, making rummaging through charity shops and sourcing antiques that little bit harder. That’s why we made sure to find you the best stores that can be shopped online, too, so you don’t need to give up your retail fix for the sake of staying home. The North East has some truly amazing vintage and second-hand shops, from clothes to furniture and all the best kind of nick-nacks in between, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

So whether you’re looking to boost your current wardrobe with an on-trend statement collar, spruce up your living room with a bold new piece, or have been fancying a new “it” bag or the perfect vintage dress to wear for date night, fret not – we’ve got you covered with these independent North East businesses.

For vintage clothing with a modern take, Trendlistr is your go-to online shop for amazing eclectic styles. Created using vintage deadstock fabric into modern styles, you manage to check the on-trend box and the sustainability one all in one go. They even have the occasional branded vintage gem in stock. We’re particularly loving their latest release of oversized collars – perfect for nailing your Autumn styling.

The Yesterday Society

Housed in the Grainger Market, The Yesterday Society has also set up shop on Etsy to continue selling during the pandemic, so you have no excuse not to go rifling through their amazing vintage pieces from the comfort of your sofa. There’s everything from vintage men’s sportswear to beautiful kimonos and dresses, and all at a reasonable price.

Corner 93

Based in Sunderland, this is a pre-loved shop with a difference, selling not just vintage, but also second-hand high-end luxury fashion and accessories, plus some amazing interior bargains. All items for sale are listed on their Instagram page – they’ve got everything from Chanel bags to Ercol chairs.
