Sunday morning property porn with Byzantine House…
Grab a coffee and (virtually) step inside Jesmond's hottest new residence, Byzantine House...
By Laura Kingston
A few weeks ago when scrolling through LinkedIn, I saw Jan Dale – founder of Urban Base Estate Agency – had posted some pictures of apartments they were selling in Jesmond. These were the ultimate clickbait property images and I ended up going down a rabbit-hole of watching all of the virtual tours.
So when we were thinking of content for our new Sunday Supplement, I knew this would be perfect to share. So if you’re in the mood for some Sunday morning property porn, keep reading.
Those familiar with the Eskdale Terrace area of Jesmond will no-doubt have walked past this Grade I listed building countless times. Constructed in 1914 by North East architect Marcus Kenneth Glass, Byzantine House in Jesmond was originally built as a synagogue and more recently was used by Newcastle School for Girls.
Its restoration and conversion has revitalised the building whilst creating arguably the most unique apartments in Jesmond.
Glass designed Byzantine House as an Art Deco interpretation of the Byzantine Revival style. Developer Provenance Group has extensive experience in regenerating unique buildings, and take pride in attention to detail and their ability to bring historical features to life.
Many of the apartments have large stained glass windows which add a unique historical character that just couldn’t be replicated elsewhere. The building’s porch has columns with a large stained-glass window filling the arch above. The best part? Unlike many apartments, the building allows for some apartments to have private residents’ entrances along with private terraces.
The Outdoor Spaces
You could be forgiven for thinking you’ve been transported to YSL’s Moroccan gardens – OK that’s maybe a slight exaggeration – but trust us when we say these gardens have been meticulously landscaped to a really high standard, with jasmine hedging, topiary box trees, climbing hydrangeas, clematis, lavender and rhododendrons to ensure seasonal coloured flowering throughout the year.
There’s also plenty of external lighting to pathways and private terraces which makes you feel like you’re returning to a luxury hotel every night – except you actually live there.
For the cyclists among us, there’s a communal cycle storage area for all residents.
Take a look inside…
The main thing that stand out for us? These apartments have been designed with clever zoning to create flexible living and entertaining areas – the designers have really maximised the space. Combined with the high ceilings and vertical slider windows, each apartment feels light, airy and also has a sense of calm. High-quality finishes throughout include decorative cornicing, feature ceiling roses and mirrored shutters in some apartments.
All of the kitchens have the same dark lacquered finish, with granite worktops and feature bronze glass-fronted cabinets. Some apartments also have breakfast bars looking out to the garden terrace.
