Step into the cold with Team HLN’s top winter footwear picks
Treads are big in HLN HQ
The Birkenstock Arizona is a genuine classic that’s been a firm favourite with men and women for decades with its timeless design. Although not the most obvious choice for winter footwear, this is a ridiculously cosy version of the sempiternal sandal, in suede leather with shearling footbed lining and straps lined with lambskin. Wear with grey woollen socks for the ultimate Grandad-in-Switzerland winter look.
These sheepskin bootee slippers are a sight for sore eyes (and feet) at the end of a hectic day. Sink tired toes into the plush sheepskin and wear the cuffs turned down to reveal the woollen cuff or rolled up for cosy ankles. Each slipper is set on a lightweight outsole that’s comfortable for stepping outside (when you’ve forgotten to put the bin out). But with this much comfort and snugness, I think I’ll be staying in, thanks.
Winter’s my favourite time to go walking, but it can be tough getting the right footwear to survive frosty footpaths. But when in doubt, turn to Adidas. Their Terrex Free Hiker GTX boots have both a Continental Rubber outsole and a responsive midsole, which work together to provide all-terrain traction. Warm, light and comfortable, all with a sneaker look? Perfect.
I love a chunky boot in any weather, and these towering Sinclairs with their quad platform sole really put my head in the clouds. Kitted out with a removable jungle piece zip, yellow welt stitching and tonnes of Doc’s attitude, they may look rough and ready but the hardwearing pebbled leather is super soft and supple.
