Let’s be honest, it’s freezing RN – and with no cosy pub to warm up in at the end of a crisp daily walk, getting your outerwear right is important. Whether you prefer a puffer or are mad for a Mac, keeping warm isn’t the only requirement we have when it comes to coats. Feeling polished always lifts our spirits, meaning we’re always on the lookout for fresh ways to style our winter fits.

To steal some outerwear outfit inspo, we’ve looked to how our favourite fashion influencers are wearing theirs. Shop their trending styles below and prepare to level up your layering.

The Devil’s In The Details

Linda Tol’s outfits always make us swoon, but we particularly love how she’s styled this outerwear look, captured by The Style Stalker. Wearing a plethora of brown-hued items, the addition of the camel sweater tied around the shoulders takes this look to new, ultra-expensive-looking heights. We will be replicating, ASAP.

LA REDOUTE COLLECTIONS £135.00

Colour Pop

Style-maverick Jeanette Madsen has a real knack for pairing pieces in expert fashion. Channel her by layering a colourful coat over an all-neutral outfit. Extra points if you colour-clash your bag, too.

ASOS: Threadbare Louisa mac coat in sage green £40.00

Boucle beauty

Boucle is a huge texture trend for 2021, so make like Francesca Saffari and embrace a woolly-look coat. You may think trousers and jumpers are your only option right now, but as Francesca shows, layering up with a skirt, tights, jumper and hat means winter doesn’t have to look any less stylish.

Pretty In Puffer

Outerwear that’s on-trend and super-cosy? Sign us up. Twin influencer Erica Davies by wearing your puffer with a chic roll neck jumper, low bun and some stylish sunnies. We love the across-body bag in a complementary shade too – file this combo in the ‘what to wear’ bank.

Next: Emma Willis Long Padded Jacket £85.00

Layer-on loungewear

This outfit shows that adding a tailored camel coat over loungewear can quickly take it from slouchy to stylish. Jessie from We The People Style looks great in her Ader Error outerwear, showing that minimal effort doesn’t have to equal minimal impact. Though it does help if your loungewear is in a striking hue.

Zara: OVERSIZE WOOL BLEND COAT £59.99

Belted and Boujie

Ani Margarian manages to look super stylish in the rain – no easy feat. Her OOTD is made polished by the addition of a wide, statement belt. Utilise this trick to update last season’s plain black coat.

Monki: Utility raglan coat £60.00

Skirt the issue

Alice Catherine perfectly demonstrates a casual style with this easy ensemble. Copy her by wearing H&M’s checked jacket over a black midi skirt, paired with brogues and a chunky knit hat. Kudos if you also match your top to your socks, à la Alice.

H&M: Checked shirt jacket £34.99

Try for Tonal

We talked about the merits of tonal dressing on HLN recently – it’s such an easy way to level up your weekend wear. A quality tan coat is an investment piece that’ll never date, and we suggest wearing yours like Fanny Ekstrand with a beige roll neck, matching jeans and a pair of Timberland-esque brown boots.

Warehouse: Double Breasted Borg Maxi Teddy £74.25

Retro revival

Grece Ghanem is proof that great style defies age. She’s nodded to the ‘70s by pairing her House of Sunny leather jacket with some hippie-esque yellow flares. The white accessories really make each piece pop – take note.

Next: Tan Leather Belted Trench Coat £230

Clashing Prints

If you favour bold outerwear, take a leaf out of Jessica Rose Lambregts’ book and pair this checked jacket with a printed trouser. Don’t be afraid to add in a few neon details to make the yellow of this jacket pop. Note how Jessica’s zingy bag and vest compliment the coat.

ONLY: CHECKED JACKET £65.00

Leopard is a neutral

If you’d like to bring a print into a usually block-coloured wardrobe, make like Alyson Walsh and try layering leopard print over a head-to-toe green outfit, (it’s the colour of the season).

GANNI: LINEN CANVAS COAT £265.00

Contrasting colours

A handy trick for creating a stellar outfit? Pick two contrasting colours and clash, clash, clash. We’ll be wearing this khaki coat with popping pinks in the style of Maria de la Orden.

Next: Khaki Emma Willis Bouclé Revere Coat £70.00

Teddy-bear style

Paula from Hill House Vintage makes a case for a modern teddy bear jacket. We’ll be wearing ours with a shirt and jeans, just like the stylish influencer herself.

&other Stories: Fluffy Faux Shearling Jacket £95.00

Bright ‘n Quilted

Alexis Foreman makes her coloured coat the main attraction by pairing it with all black everything. Whatever your quilted coat’s colour, try this trick to bring attention to your outerwear.

&other Stories: Quilted Banana Sleeve Coat £135.00

Checkmate

Emmanuelle Koffi knows a great checked coat never goes out of style. But we wouldn’t have thought of pairing ours with tailored shorts – until now, that is. Or, at least, when it gets just a smidge warmer.

ASOS: Pimkie trench coat in brown checks £49.99

Pale and Interesting

No need to pack away your dresses and pale pastel coats, as Karina from The Style Idealist shows – layering them up makes for an Insta-worthy outfit.

Statement separates

Lucy Williams has got on board with the puffer trend, and we love her pairing of the black jacket with statement trousers – it makes each colour really pop.

Arket: Down Puffer Jacket £175.00

Pastel perfection

Steal Lindsey Islas style in this pretty Oasis jacket. Don’t be afraid to lean into a multi-pastel colour palette, it really works.

 Oasis: Short Quilted Jacket £59.25

Boots go bold

If you’re wondering how to bring last year’s long black coat into the new season, let Renia Jaz of Ven’s Wife Style bright neon boot be a lesson in statement accessorising.

Weekday: Ellinor PU Coat £110

Embrace The Kitsch

Mathilde Clauzet‘s Shrimps jacket really puts the fun in fashion. This season’s runways brought elements of kitsch to S/S ‘21, and so should you. We’d work the trend in Skinny Dip’s cute cloud print coat and a bucket hat, just like Mathilde.

Head In The Clouds Faux Fur Coat £56.00
