Top 5 Places in the North East for a Takeaway Roast Dinner

By Sophie Swift
For those of you who, like us, can’t live without your weekly Sunday roast (with all the trimmings), we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite pubs and restaurants across the North East which are currently offering takeaway Sunday lunch options.

Backworth Colliery Bakery, Tyne and Wear
Backworth Colliery Bakery has recently started offering takeaway Sunday lunches available for collection and delivery. Serving an impressive array of roast dinners, choose from chicken, beef or pork for £9.95 each or push the boat out and opt for the mixed meat option for £12.95. All Backworth Colliery Bakery’s meals come with seasonal mixed vegetables, a variety of potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding and rich gravy, and they can deliver your roast for as little as £1. You can order over the phone or via Facebook – just ensure you have cash on you as they don’t take card payments.

The Cellar Door, Durham
Pre-COVID, The Cellar Door was the perfect venue for a celebratory feast (for any occasion). But since the doors of the UK’s hospitality industry closed they’ve opted to keep serving their customers with takeaway food, including delicious Sunday dinners. The Cellar Door is open 12pm–5pm for delivery or collection on Sundays. They serve a topside of beef, chicken breast, or a leg of lamb and each dinner comes with parsnips, carrots, cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, mash, broccoli, Yorkshire puddings and a jus. There’s also the option for a vegan Sunday lunch if you want to go animal-free, and all their lunch options are £12 each.

The Blackbird, Ponteland
The Blackbird is a pub with a past. Formerly Ponteland Castle, which was destroyed in 1388, the building itself is a special one – but it isn’t the only thing that’s special about this place. The food is exquisite, especially the Sunday lunches. The Blackbird offer the largest selection of takeaway Sunday roasts to-go that we’ve seen at HLN, including a topside of beef, pork belly, roasted chicken breast or roast turkey and stuffing, all for £10.95. Or for those who prefer to go meatless, there’s a nut roast option for £9.95. There’s also a trio of meats, which is £12.95. Each dinner can be served with an additional portion of pigs in blankets or cauliflower cheese for £3 each. All dinners from The Blackbird are for collection only and can be ordered via the website or over the phone.

The Lamp Room, Seaham
The Lamp Room in Seaham was a favourite haunt of ours pre-COVID, and has now turned its talents to takeaway Sunday lunches until it can fling open its doors once more. Beef, lamb, pork and chicken are all available and are sourced locally from farms based here in the North East – which means you’ll get that real field-to-plate experience from here. All roasts are available for delivery or collection and can be ordered via Facebook or over the phone, with prices ranging from £8.95 to £11.95.

Brinkburn Street Brewery, Ouseburn
Brinkburn Street Brewery has been an Ouseburn pitstop for us ever since it opened, so we weren’t going to let a little thing like a global pandemic stop us! Customers can call, order via Facebook or use an app to get their hands on their succulent Sunday roasts to take away and enjoy at home, which include beef, chicken, lamb, pork and a nut roast. They even have a two-course deal where you can order a main and a dessert for £15.95 – told you they were good.
