Cooks Cabin is one of the best. Just a hop, skip and a jump from Whitby Harbour, this idyllic seaside retreat boasts sloped ceilings and skylight windows, making it bright yet still super cosy throughout. Open plan in its design, you can cook up a storm in the modern kitchen, unwind in style in the living room (with its flat-screen TV) or plan tomorrow’s day out in the dining room.

After a day out exploring, there’s no better feeling than sinking into a hot bubble bath – especially one where you can look up at the stars through the bathroom’s skylight as you soak. And after a night out on the tiles, sink into the plush double bed here, decked out with premium linen for the kind of quality night’s sleep you just don’t get at home.

And all this from £80 a night? It’s an absolute steal!

If you’re looking for a romantic retreat in Whitby, look no further than Cow House. Ok, so don’t let the name put you off! This cosy cottage is a step above most udders. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist! But we promise we won’t milk it…)

A few steps away from the famous cobbles, you won’t forget this quirky, three-storey cottage in a hurry – the exposed beams, original brickwork, freestanding bathtub and wooden furniture all bring those rustic farmhouse vibes in bucketloads, while the cosy seating area is a dream setting to snuggle up together and listen to some music.

The pièce de resistance? The bedroom, of course. With a king-size sleigh bed dressed in only the finest linens and its own flat-screen TV opposite, late nights and lazy mornings beckon.

You’ll not beat No. 30 Whitby. An impressive townhouse sleeping up to 20 guests with 10 ensuite rooms spread across three floors, (each with its own king-size bed), it’s one of the best boltholes going for a weekend away with the girls.

Recently refurbished with sea-green kitchen cabinets and white brick-style wall tiles, No. 30 is a modern and attractive setting in which to socialise, snack and sup with the gang, with an extendable dining table meaning there’s plenty of space for all your self-catering needs.

Open up the patio doors here and step out into the sleek patio area where, when the sun shines, you can take your meals alfresco in the outdoor dining area, which is still perfectly private. Or, if the weather takes a turn for the worse, snuggle up in the homely living room, with three leather sofas and a flatscreen TV.

From £500 a night – that’s only £25 each, if you have 19 mates – you’ll struggle to find an apartment here for better value.

Host & Stay have soooo many amazing family cottages in this little nook of the North, but our favourite? Shunner Howe Lodge. It’s like your average family holiday apartment… but better.

It’s a little outside Whitby itself – located in the quaint village of Egton, within rural woodland just a short six miles away – but we promise, any commute is more than worth it to stay in this idyll.

Perhaps most stunning is the super high, vaulted ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows, which are a showpiece and a half – flooding the lounging area with light. But the surrounding woodland more than maintains your privacy.

The incredible open-plan living and dining area here makes it the perfect place for you and the kids to kick back and relax, without feeling like you’re on top of each other.

Whether sinking into the comfy leather sofas and watching the flatscreen TV or, in the winter months, snuggling up by the log-burner to get lost in a good book, relaxing definitely won’t be a problem.

With a kitchen fully equipped with everything you could possibly need to feed the 5,000, you can enjoy your meals in the spacious indoor dining area or eat alfresco out on the terrace, which also has outdoor seating.

And with three spacious bedrooms (sleeping 5 guests in total), Shunner Howe Lodge offers a king ensuite bedroom, a single bedroom and the master bedroom on the first floor, which boasts an uber-comfy king-size bed and an ensuite shower room. Cracking.

Be sure to head over to the West side of town. Although in the East side you’ll find the narrow medieval streets dotted with cool boutiques and the fish restaurants Whitby is known and loved for, over the swing bridge that sits over the River Esk you’ll find plenty of cosy pubs, as well as fun arcades and – you guessed it – even more fish restaurants! Continue along the road and you’ll reach the beautiful blue flag West Cliff Beach, lined with idyllic beach huts.

And, of course, you’d be daft to visit Whitby and not check out the renowned ruins of Whitby Abbey. Famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel Dracula, the atmospheric ruins have attracted visitors from far and wide for centuries. While you’re in the area, be sure to climb the 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary too – which stands impressively on Whitby’s windswept East Cliff and has views for days. Famous for its links with seafarers like Captain Cook, there has been a place of worship on the site since (at least) the 7th century AD.

Step outside of Whitby and you’ll uncover a haven of woodland and moorland as part of the North York Moors National Park, meaning the cute coastal town is the perfect pitstop for anyone looking for a cheeky ramble or two. Just six miles from Whitby, the village of Egton is popular for its promenade on West Cliff Beach. If you’re stopping by, head to Egton Bridge, Arncliffe Woods or the River Esk too, where you can skip over small stepping stones to a cute wooded island.
