Why everyone’s talking about niacinamide

The world has heard nothing but hype about what wonders hyaluronic and salicylic acid can do for our skin, as well as the beautiful benefits of vitamin C and retinol. Just when we think we have those skincare secrets sussed, another jumps on our radar. Well, we got you. Take a read to see why niacinamide needs to be a part of your new skincare routine.

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 and is mostly famous for its soothing and healing properties. Vitamin B3 contains one of the most effective anti-inflammatories known in skincare and is quite the multi-tasking marvel; according to Paula Begoun, founder of Paula’s Choice, niacinamide ‘has so many ways to help the skin.’

‘Research has shown niacinamide works to protect skin from environmental damage and also helps skin make more collagen and hyaluronic acid,’ she says. ‘It improves hydration, reduces signs of ageing, diminishes enlarged pores, and significantly lessens skin discolouration.’

Niacinamide surely packs a punch in terms of its benefits, but how do we know which skin types it suits best? The simple answer is: all of them!

Begoun believes there are several reasons why it works so well for all skin: ‘One way is because of its powerful antioxidant properties,’ she says. ‘Another is how niacinamide helps generate other important substances in skin. Even more notable is how it works as a “cell-communicating ingredient”. This means niacinamide can “talk” to all kinds of cells in skin, telling them to make better, healthier, younger acting cells.’

Have we tempted you enough to give niacinamide a try yourself? Here are our top 5 product recommendations:
