1. Cake Stories

Family-run coffee house and cakery business Cake Stories is based right in the heart of Jesmond – and is certainly a HLN fave. Having also recently expanded their business to the Clock Tower at Hoults Yard, Cake Stories offer a fine selection of coffee, tea, sandwiches, scones and, of course, lots and LOTS of cake!

The gifting options here are really special. Offering a delectable selection of letterbox bakes which you can order online and send to that someone special (even if that person just so happens to be you), they’re a great way to treat loved ones with something they really like.

4. Honour Health

HLN’s Expert in Residence, Honour Health is the dental kingdom in which the Queen of Smiles herself resides, Gulshan Dhanoya.

Honour Health provides NHS and private dental treatments, teeth whitening, dental hygiene services, orthodontics treatments, veneers, composite bonding and facial aesthetics – all within their chic, spacious premises on Osborne Road (they also have outposts in Ponteland and Stanley, just FYI). 5. Kennedy and Rhind

With more than eight decades of experience between them, it’s safe to say that David Kennedy and Murray Rhind know their way around a kitchen. From crusty sourdough loaves to decadent sweet tarts and pies filled to the brim with quality ingredients, you’ll find it all here.

Located in the heart of Jesmond, with a weekly pop-up at The Blackbird in Ponteland, Kennedy and Rhind is the perfect place to pick up handmade, artisan products guaranteed to get your mouth watering. The even better news? They’ve literally just opened a new cafe at their bakery on Holly West Avenue, with a new menu including double yolker boiled eggs with English asparagus dippers and smoked salmon soldiers, ham hock potato cake with a poached hens egg and mustard, and scrambled Clarence Court eggs with buttermilk, dill cured salmon and sourdough toast. See you there.

6. Grate Newcastle

Grate is Jesmond’s independent cheesemonger championing local and British cheeses – plus all the delicious accompaniments you could ever need!

Owner Moz has worked in cheese and food retail for most of her working life. About three years ago, she came to the conclusion that she wanted to be her own boss and, in early 2020, Grate was born. There’s nowhere else in Newcastle dedicated purely to the love of cheese, so Grate really is extra special.

And make sure you stay tuned – Moz plans to start introducing cheese-tasting, as well as a curated selection of charcuterie and wines. So in other words, heaven!
