In our humble opinion, it’s a common misconception that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For us, beauty is in the eye of the individual – it’s about how we feel about how we look and how, in turn, our looks make us feel.

As it happens, this seems to be a belief we share with local aesthetics clinic, Novellus. A brand centred around helping their patients feel like the best version of themselves, with the help of natural enhancements and subtle aesthetics treatments, the medical training that each and every one of the staff at Novellus have undertaken has helped them understand the complex psychology and emotions that surround the idea of beauty and self-esteem.

With the help of a thorough consultation and assessment process, the Novellus team listen to our needs and concerns to devise a bespoke treatment plan centred around helping us realise our natural beauty-boosting our confidence and self-worth in the process.

From lip fillers and anti-wrinkle injections to chemical peels, laser hair removal and medical-grade skincare, the highly-qualified team here have earned themselves a national reputation for their natural aesthetics style, using the latest and best techniques to help us look good – and feel even better.

We caught up with founder and Clinic Director Dr Steven Land and Nurse Practitioner Ness Griffiths to find out a little more…

What is Novellus Aesthetics all about?

Ness: Self-confidence – making you feel like the best version of yourself, while maintaining your natural looks.

Steven: Exactly, helping people become the best version of themselves. We understand the complex interplay of how you look, how you feel and how you act. Put simply – we help you look better, building your self-confidence and helping you develop as a person.

There’s a complex psychology surrounding beauty and self-esteem. How do you take into account the emotional side of aesthetics in your work?

Steven: The cornerstone of all our treatments is our extended consultation process. During this time, we explore our patient’s emotions – how they feel when they look in the mirror and their needs and concerns. We understand that there are emotions linked to how we feel about ourselves and how we look. Only by taking all of these factors into account can we develop a bespoke treatment plan that is going to help our patients develop inside and out.

All our aesthetic practitioners have a background in NHS medicine and have, therefore, undertaken extensive cross-speciality training – meaning we can take a holistic approach to the care of our patients.

That must give you such a sense of job satisfaction.

Ness: I find my work hugely satisfying, knowing that we can have a hugely positive impact on a patients’ self-esteem with subtle and natural enhancements, rather than reinventing them. I’m always my patient’s biggest cheerleader and will say no when they’re in an emotionally vulnerable state.

Perhaps the most positive impact I’ve had on a patient is when I took someone who felt like they had lost their identity to their cancer (now in remission) and the corresponding chemo treatment. After initially having a consultation elsewhere, she was anxious at the idea of any injectable treatment. But, after an open and honest conversation in her consultation, we agreed on a treatment plan and booked a follow up to set the ball in motion. When she saw herself in the mirror post-treatment, she burst into tears – saying that she finally looked like herself again.

So talk us through the process – what happens when we get in touch asking to book a treatment at Novellus?

Steven: When you first get in touch, you will most likely speak to our clinic co-ordinator, Katie, and she’ll book you in for your initial consultation. Prior to your appointment, you’ll receive some questionnaires regarding potential exposure to COVID–19 – to ensure we maintain your safety and that of our clinic.

When you attend your consultation, one of our practitioners will spend as much time as required going through your concerns and expectations. We cover what treatments you have had previously, what skincare regime you use, what beauty treatments you may already have and even what you do for a living and what special events you may have coming up. This allows us to build up the fullest picture possible of you as an individual and, therefore, to tailor what treatments may work best for you.

After this discussion, we’ll take some time to examine your facial structure – looking at your areas of concern and at any indicators of facial ageing. We’ll talk through what treatments may provide the most benefit to your wellbeing and we’ll then formulate a plan together. Part of the consultation process involves discussing all of the potential benefits and risks of our medical procedures; you’ll then go away with a written version of your treatment plan, to allow you time to make a fully informed decision.

If you decide to go ahead with any treatments, then on the day of your first treatment we go through a full medical questionnaire again, confirm your consent and perform the treatments as per the plan. A full aftercare regime is also discussed and e-mailed out to you after the procedure, and any follow-up appointments are booked in.

How do you ensure your treatments are as safe as possible for your clients?

Steven: Training, training, training.

Ness: Definitely. In the last 18 months, I’ve been on 20+ training courses to learn different techniques and skills.

Steven: Both of our practitioners have a background in emergency medicine, so they’re used to dealing with uncertainty and emergencies – but the best emergency is the one that never happens. Extensive training in procedures, anatomy, physiology and complication management means we have an incredibly low rate of complications and are adept at dealing with any that should occur. In fact, we appear to have become the defect clinic for helping other practitioners and patients deal with any significant complications that do occur.

Ness: We also ensure our patients’ safety by taking a complete and thorough medical history, ensuring there’s plenty of time between consultations and treatments, and guiding them through the pre– and post-care process as thoroughly as possible.

What do you predict will be some of your most sought-after treatments once lockdown fully lifts?

Steven: Full face rejuvenations. People are moving away from wanting individual procedures and are wanting a more harmonious, overall treatment plan of fillers, anti-wrinkle treatments and skincare to give a look that is overall more balanced and natural.

Ness: Yeah, full face rejuvenation is the big one at the moment. But the cornerstone of most rejuvenation is definitely cheek augmentation. We spent lockdown revitalising our consultation process to be more outcome-focused, rather than specific treatment-focused – relying on emotional cues to make sure we’re aiming for the best outcome for each individual patient.

What are you most passionate about, as a business?

Steven: Our patients – the way we can make people feel is a genuine joy. We get to come to ‘work’ and make people happy on a daily basis. It doesn’t even feel like a job, really.

Ness: Absolutely. Boosting their self esteem, with natural results.

Who would you say most inspires you?

Steven: Again, our patients inspire me every day with their transformations and the changes they go through. They inspire me to keep learning, keep training and keep going. And my family, they inspire me to keep working hard to give them everything they deserve…

Ness: As cliché as this sounds, all the resilient women I surround myself with inspire me – both at work and in my personal friendships. We are each other’s cheerleaders, we pull each other up when we’re down and remind each other that we can do this!

What does the future look like for Novellus Aesthetics?

Steven: Busy! We’re starting up our training academy soon, training the next generation of aesthetics doctors and nurses in our own mould – conscientious, principled and highly skilled. We’re looking at launching new Novellus clinics across the North over the next couple of years too, and our own skincare range is just about to be released!

Ness: Yep, we’re hoping to expand to other areas of the UK in the next 12-24 months. We’re about to get our training academy up and running, and hopefully, slowly but surely, take over the world.
