With Summer just around the corner, we’re starting to see exciting events popping up left, right and centre around the Toon.

And while we all love a good film, when the sun’s shining we don’t want to be stuck indoors. Luckily, our friends at NE1 have us covered – thanks, guys! Why? Well, NE1 have welcomed back Screen on the Green – the large, open-air cinema right in the heart of Newcastle’s Old Eldon Square. And the best part about it is that it’s free! They treat us well, don’t they?

Screen on the Green is the first element of NE1’s Summer in the City programme, which has launched to transform the city throughout the warmer months to give us a vibrant, safe and colourful welcome back into the city centre. Just what we need after the dull year that we’ve managed to somehow power through.

Summer of Sport…

Having kicked things off already by screening all of Wimbledon so far, Screen on the Green’s next big highlight is the Olympics Opening Ceremony from Tokyo on 23rd July, before their livestreaming of Newcastle Pride on 24th July (which is a virtual event again this year). And if we’re blessed with nice weather (hey, you never know!) this will be the perfect place to enjoy those rays without missing any of these iconic events.

For anyone movie-mad…

More of a film fan? Don’t worry, once we’ve had our Summer of sport, Screen on the Green’s schedule will then switch to movies with a six-week programme of big hitters – from all-time classics to family favourites and newly released blockbusters.

These films will also keep any little ones in your life busy throughout the school Summer holidays, giving you (or someone you love) some well-needed time out! Two films will be screened each day. Fun family favourites will be screened from noon while, once evening hits, a varied range of genres will be shown from 6pm for our entertainment. What better way to relax after a busy day at work, eh? Or the perfect way to make that next date-night just that little bit more romantic, watching a movie under the stars…

And this year, NE1 has changed things up a bit – introducing different themes that’ll run throughout the listings too. With Rom Coms on Monday evenings, ‘Throwback Thursdays’ featuring blast from the past favourites, cult classics, and iconic movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s, and Friday night being Blockbuster Night, Screen on the Green gives us the chance to finish the working week in style and start your weekend the right way!

Did you miss some of the biggest movies that were released over lockdown? Well, it’s the Friday screenings that’ll give you your brand-new blockbuster hit. From Christopher Nolan’s latest mind-bending blockbuster, Tenet, to recent smash hit Godzilla vs Kong and DC Comics’ latest installment, Wonder Woman, 1984, which will be screened the day after its predecessor, 2017’s Wonder Woman, as part of a wonder-ful movie weekend.

All of these will be enjoyed in the comfort of NE1’s famous deck chairs, bean bags, and picnic benches, with grass seating areas also set up for additional space, so you can be sure you’ll get a seat. It’s time to lose ourselves in that cinematic experience that we’ve all missed.

After a year of events being put on hold, Ben Whitfield, Head of Marketing and Events at NE1, is thrilled to be back hosting events in the city. Oh, and he’s got lots more exciting plans for the Summer, so watch this space. “All our activities are designed to bring colour, vibrancy, and life back to Newcastle, offering families and the public more reasons to visit and stay a little longer to enjoy all that the city has to offer”, says Ben.

“Screen on the Green is a huge favourite with the public and a great way for families to entertain the kids for free during the long Summer holidays – we know they were sorely missed during lockdown last year. Thankfully, as an open-air event, Screen on the Green can be delivered safely, with seating adjusted depending on COVID guidelines. We can’t wait to welcome people back.”

The 2020 and 2021 film releases lined up for Screen on the Green so far includes:

  • Godzilla vs Kong
  • Summerland
  • Trolls; World Tour
  • Tom and Jerry: The Movie
  • Emma
  • Witches
  • Ordinary Love

And the full movie schedule will be released in the coming weeks. To keep up to date with all the movie news and what’s on as part of NE1’s Summer in the City programme, visit their website
