Summer is here, which means it’s time to hit the beach.

And whether you’re jetting off to Barbados (yep, it’s on the green list guys), or you’re staying a little closer to home, we all have to face up to this question sooner or later: what do we wear?

A day at the beach is different for everyone. For some of us, it will involve soaking up the sunshine and surfing the waves; for others, it’s a day of hiding under a brolly in the shade whilst cracking open a new book. But we all want to feel cool, comfy and – if at all possible in heat like this – chic. An outfit to the beach is way more than just a bikini and a pair of sunnies. Think oversized striped shirts, wide-leg trousers, and boho dresses. Need some inspo? We’ve got all your oceanside outfit combos ready and waiting, so all you need to do is seas the day!

Sexy swimsuits

We all need a selection of gorge swimwear to keep us feeling cool and calm on the sand – they are vital beach apparel, after all.

What we’re seeing a lot of at the moment? Well, your classic black all-in-one swimsuit never goes out of style.

Pops of colour more your vibe? While we’ve always thought the brighter the better on the beach, you can nod to current trends a little more by swapping your neons for your pastels. If you’re feeling daring, go for a cheeky cut-out too.

River Island - Purple Structured Gingham Swimsuit - £40.00

Mint Velvet - Rey One Shoulder Swimsuit - £65.00

Breezy smock dresses

Nothing says Summer like a smock dress paired with a woven handbag and a wide-brim hat. This fun, airy style works great for a late-in-the-day beach outfit and offers us that perfect transition style from sunbathing to sipping cocktails.

Oxygen London - Mia Dress - £35.00 (was £47.00)

Elegant Wide Pants

These are one of our favourite beach outfit staples. Slip them on over your swimwear or pair them with a tee and they’ll take you instantly from lounging in the sand to sipping wine in a beachfront bar without any hassle. Oh, and don’t forget to add some oversized sunnies to give you that ultimate beach babe look.

Cute matching sets

Getting the right matching set doesn’t just create one outfit – but gives us four outfits wrapped up in our purchase. Wear the two pieces together or pair them with others in your wardrobe for new looks, the possibilities are endless. Best of all, they create an effortless look that’ll be picture-perfect from day to night.

Boho maxi dresses

We’re loving all the bohemian vibes we’re seeing at the moment. And what better place to embrace the boho style than at the beach?

From tie-dye prints to frills and bows, the best part of wearing a maxi dress is that you can throw it on over your swimsuit, pair up with jewellery and sandals and you’re ready to go the bar!

Mimi’s Edit, Lila Pastel Colours Button Through Maxi Dress, £42.00

Eleven Boutique, Tie Dye Maxi Dress, £40.00

Oversized striped shirts

When in doubt, an oversized button-down shirt creates a timeless beach outfit.

Beachwear is all about effortlessness, so you can’t go wrong with this staple piece – just throw it over your swimwear bottoms, undo a few buttons at the top, pair with a chunky belt and voila – you’ll be a bougie beach babe.

HLN top tip: Buy a shirt a few sizes above your own

House of Zana, Boss Babe Shirts, £50.00 (was £65.00)

Statement Sunnies

Sometimes beach looks can feel a bit basic. But that’s where your statement sunglasses come in. They can bring an outfit to life by adding that little extra je ne sais quoi.

The best part? They’re a great way to hide your eyes when you’re having a sneaky nap in the sun. (Always remember to still put on your sun cream before snoozing, though!)

Asos, Mango square lens tortoiseshell glasses in brown, £19.99

Taylor Morris - Zero - £150.00 (was £210.00)
