4 alternative cocktail spots to mix it up in this weekend

Sipping zombies in a state-of-the-art shooting range tickling your fancy? Or maybe you’re more up for snuggling down in a late-night café-bar with an Aperol Spritz? Whatever your plans this weekend, here are a few cocktail bars that are just a little different.

Bun Bun, South Shields

Let’s face it: we all want to be sitting on some exotic beach somewhere, sipping on our favourite ice-cold cocktails. But as that’s pretty unlikely at the moment, our friends at Bun Bun are giving us the next best thing – a healthy dose of the Mediterranean magic we’ve been sorely missing, just in South Shields.

And what better way to wash down their mouth-watering menu – which focuses predominantly on gorgeous Greek cuisine – than with a cheeky cocktail? If you’re feeling tropical, make sure you try the Mount Etna cocktail, which is a super-citrus combo of blood orange gin, limoncello and orange liqueur. Or if you want to really get your tastebuds tingling, order a Balearic Island Ice Tea – filled with citrus vodka, ginger Bacardi and spiced Bacardi. All the holiday vibes!

Point Blank Shooting, Newcastle

This state-of-the-art simulation shooting range is not necessarily a place you’d expect to find crafty cocktails. But we popped down there just to test the waters – because we’re kind like that – and we can confirm that they don’t disappoint. But, of course, the ultimate competitive socialising experience isn’t complete without some cracking bevs, is it?

From classic cocktail faves to their signature shooting-themed specials, you’ll be spoilt for choice at Point Blank. And the best part? They have a happy hour running 12pm–7pm all days except Saturday.

HLN TOP TIP: Try their Trigger Happy cocktail and thank us later.

Rustic Cup, Whitley Bay

If you’re having a refreshing stroll along the coast, we know just the place to make your day extra special – Rustic Cup.  Vibrant café by day, relaxed bar by evening, let loose and embrace those weekend vibes by treating yourself to a cheeky cocktail at the coast. After all, it’s 5pm somewhere, right?

With a whole host of classic cocktails on the menu – think mimosas, martinis and Aperol spritz – we think you’ve earned that chance to sit back and soak in the sun (potentially), sea and spirit of Whitley Bay.

The Queen Victoria, Gosforth

Nothing beats a night nestled in a cosy pub. So why not level up your ‘drinks down the local’ by adding a few classy cocktails into the mix? You’ve worked hard this week – you deserve it!

From strawberry daiquiris and espresso martinis to long island iced teas, the recently refurbished Queen Victoria serves us all our favourite traditional cocktails, with a little modern flair added to each. Perfect for washing down their top-notch pub grub and Sunday roasts.

HLN TOP TIP: Speak to one of their friendly mixologists if you want something bespoke – they’ll make your bev just the way you like it.
