Whatever type of week you’ve had, there’s nothing that a cocktail can’t make better. Right, ladies?

Now we’re not sure about you, but we find that we always go to the same cocktail bars over and over again. But we reckon Galentine’s Day is the perfect time to push the boat out for our girls and mix things up a bit – and we know just the place.

If you like piña coladas or if this senorita needs a margarita, Newcastle’s best-kept secret – Mother Mercy – is the mother of all cocktail bars, with their drinks menu full of them.

Where can you find this bolthole of a bar, which takes us away from it all while still right in the hustle and bustle of the Toon’s nightlife? In the Cloth Market, tucked away under the Old George Inn, this beautiful basement bar lies behind a secret blue door and serves us all those exclusive, intimate and super-chilled vibes.

Mother Mercy has really shaken – and stirred – things up after opening in November 2019. They even served us cocktails at home during lockdown, so we already know they know how to treat us well. But now they’ve been named as one of the Top 50 Cocktail Bars in the UK, we think it’s about time we frequented their actual premises a little more frequently. After all, it’s not hard to see why they’ve been awarded such an impressive accolade.

Whether you’re looking for after-work drinks by table service, or you fancy a catch-up with the girls while listening to some live music or a resident DJ, this underground hideaway is for anyone who prefers a more sophisticated sip – without sacrificing their sense of fun.

Why not explore their Modern Classic cocktails range, which have all been invented over the last 50 years by this generation’s most influential bars and bartenders? Embrace your inner Sex and the City diva by sipping on a Cosmo, fulfill all your disco dreams with the vibrant (and insanely good) Insanely Good Midori Sour, or be like Daisy, Gatsby and co with a King Kong Old Fashioned or two, (it is the roaring ‘20s now, after all).

Feeling adventurous? Try something totally new from Mother Mercy’s Originals menu, made by their in-house team, including some of our own faves, Bananabread Punch and Winter Sun Spritz. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed!

Oh, and how could we forget their Instagramble interior? From the moment you walk through the doors, we can guarantee you’ll be blown away by this contemporary cocktail bar’s decadent décor. From stunning statement colours and modern wall art to cosy downlighting and gorgeously golden bar stools, this stylish basement bar is the ultimate backdrop to level up your Insta game.

You’ll have a night to remember at Mother Mercy, of that we can be certain. We’re also pretty sure that, should you go once, you’ll soon find yourself coming back for more. No such thing as a perfect bar? We’ll let you decide by popping along for yourself…

As many of you probably already know, here at HLN we love a cheeky cocktail. We’ve already got our tables booked and will be popping down to see our friends at Mother Mercy on Sunday, February 13th at 5pm, as part of our own Galentine’s Day celebrations. We’d love for you to come along and join us!
