So, you’ve picked your dream dress, you’ve booked your wonderful wedding venue, and you’ve sent out your invitations. All that’s left to do is find some bridal makeup inspiration for your big day.
But deciding on the perfect wedding makeup look isn’t easy. Do you play it safe and go with a classic-but-cool eyeliner flick and nude lip combo? Or do you make a statement and opt for something a little bolder, like a red lip and some smoky bronze eyeshadow? The options are endless.
What you don’t want is to look totally different to your normal self and then look back on your album in years to come with regrets. Your bridal makeup should be an expression of your own personality and style.
This is why we caught up with North East wedding makeup artist Josephine Birkett. With over a decade of experience in the wedding makeup industry and a makeup artistry degree under her brush belt, she creates bespoke bridal looks that are almost too beautiful. Almost.
Alongside weddings, Josephine works in the fashion makeup industry, so she keeps up with the latest trends and techniques. Here, she reveals six top bridal makeup trends and how to nail each look…

BRIDAL MAKEUP
Summer skin
Who doesn’t want to be glowing on their wedding day? This trend is all about creating bronzed skin that sculpts the face and gives it warmth.
‘Exfoliate the skin, then use tanning water on the face to create an even perfect base to add a complementary tan shade to your natural complexion,’ says Josephine. ‘Then add veils of medium coverage foundation to create a flawless base. Using a cream bronzer is perfect for sculpting the cheekbones whilst also being undetectable, as cream products blend seamlessly into the skin.’

Metallic lids
You’re sure to have a sparkle in your eyes on your special day thanks to this trend, which highlights and frames your beautiful eyes with complementary shades of metallic hues.
‘To create this trend, always use an eye primer to ensure your lid colour is going to stay put all day,’ says Josephine. ‘A loose pigment will get the most amazing sheen to the lid – but, if you use a loose pigment, make sure you spray your brush with a setting spray first, then dip it into the loose pigment. If the brush is slightly damp, the pigment will adhere better to the brush, which means you don’t get fallout on your skin.’

THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE
Bright, bold lip
Brighten up your daughter’s special day and stand out from the crowd by injecting a touch of colour with this trend to give warmth to the face. Simple, but very effective.
‘For this trend, you could pick out a specific colour in your dress and match your lipstick to it, or go with one of your favourite shades,’ says Josephine.
‘To get this application right, make sure you use a lip pencil in the matching shade to line and colour in the lips before applying the lipstick. This will define the lips, stop the lipstick from moving and give you a longer-lasting application.’

THE BRIDESMAIDS
Highlighted skin
Time to level up your highlighting game. Adding luminosity into the skin creates a gorgeous au natural glow from within, making you picture perfect ready.
‘Use a small face brush to apply powder highlight to the cheekbones and underneath the brow bone,’ says Josephine. ‘Set the makeup with a setting spray, which has pearl particles in to create a soft sheen to the skin.’

Shades of rose
This trend is a perfect look that’ll complement any blushing bride. Get this English rose style that we guarantee will fit any skin tone.
‘This trend is all about using the same pink or mauve shades on the eyes, cheeks and lips to create a cohesive bridesmaid look,’ says Josephine. ‘To create this look, use a cream product that you can use on the lips and cheeks to get the perfect matching flush.’

THE WEDDING GUESTS
Pastel eyes
A perfect on-trend look that’s been strutted down all the fashion week catwalks out there, and which will look gorgeous in this spring/summer sunshine.
‘To create this look, use a small eyeshadow brush and pat a matte pastel eye shadow onto the lid of the eye,’ says Josephine. ‘Matte shadows tend to work best, as they have a better colour payoff.’
