Finding your dream wedding dress can be stressful. After all, it’s not every day you get married and it’s probably the most expensive dress you’ll ever own. With the pressure to find ‘the one’ it can be hard to find a bridal gown that suits your personality and body shape.

But no matter what your budget, style or timeline, we caught up with North East wedding dress experts and owners of Corsetry & Couture, Rare Bridal and EB Bridal for their advice for wedding dress shopping.

RESEARCH BEFOREHAND

‘Pinterest is always a good place to start when looking for inspiration. It’s a great way to collect all of your ideas in one space,’ says Aimee Veitch, Corsetry & Couture. ‘We often recommend that our brides bring pictures of dresses that they like to our design meetings, so that we can find out all about them, their ideas and style preferences – and how we can make their garment scream ‘them’.’’

CHECK OUT TRENDS

Over the last year, our collection of classic, simple and elegant dresses has been the most popular,’ says Hannah Braidford, EB Bridal. ‘But if you want something with a bit more sparkle, all of our dresses are very adaptable.’

KNOW YOUR WEDDING THEME

Before picking your dress, always try to keep the venue and theme in mind because the last thing you want is for your dress to clash with your overall wedding style. Also, if you’re undecided on what type of dress you want, your theme could help you to decide on a style.

BUY THE RIGHT UNDERWEAR

Some of our dresses offer a great deal of in-built support so brides would not need to wear a bra for these dresses,’ says Jade Johnson, Rare Bridal. ‘However, if you are going to wear a bra make sure it fits properly by getting a bra fitting. So many people wear ill-fitting bras and it won’t do you any favours when you are wearing your beautiful wedding dress.

‘If you want to wear Spanx, that’s a personal preference. You’ll find most of our styles are quite relaxed so glide over your body rather than clinging to any areas you don’t want it to. Bring them to your appointment if you feel more comfortable doing so but you might find you won’t even need them.’

BRING HEELS TO YOUR FITTING

‘We always say to brides to bring the shoes or a similar style and height of shoes they’ll be wearing at their wedding to their dress fitting,’ says Hannah. ‘It makes a huge difference to the length of your dress and it won’t cause delays on alterations which sometimes can take up to six to 10 months.’

BE OPEN AND HONEST WITH YOUR BRIDAL CONSULTANT

‘During our fittings, we can talk about your insecurities and your best bits and then we’ll make sure your dress is shape-enhancing and you-enhancing – so that when you wear it, you’ll feel amazing,’ says Aimee. ‘When it comes to body shapes and sizes, wobbly bits, nipple issues, arm flaps and body hair, we’ve seen it all before. So, just relax you’re in safe hands.’

KEEP THE SEASON IN MIND

If you’re jetting off to get married in the Caribbean, go for lightweight fabric and more loose-fitting styles. Or, if you’re tying the knot during the magical winter in the Northumberland countryside, go for heavier fabrics like satin or taffeta. If it’s Christmas, why not opt for snow-like sparkles?

KNOW YOUR SKIN TONE

‘Ivory seems to be the thing now,’ says EB Bridal owner Hannah Braidford. ‘One of my clients was a real English Rose with red hair and pale-skinned, so not wanting to wash her out, we went for an ivory wedding dress rather than white. There’s actually a range of different shades of cream, white and ivory that we can pair with your natural skin tone.’

STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF

‘At Corsetry & Couture, you can tell us your ideas about style, shape, colour and fabrics – no matter how different or unusual, we love quirky,’ says Aimee. ‘Every detail is meticulously designed, cut out, boned and sewn together to your measurements whilst enhancing your natural curves and personality making you feel fabulous.’

ORDER TOO BIG RATHER THAN TOO SMALL

We cater for people of all proportions. Many off-the-peg garments are made to standard sizes – and very few of us will fit into a standard size,’ says Aimee. ‘By transferring your individual measurements into a bespoke dress through consultations, pattern drafting and regular fittings, we will ensure your garment fits like a glove.’

MAKE SURE THE DRESS FITS

‘Our expert dressmaker and joint owner, Rita, has over 22 years’ experience in professional wedding dressmaking and she has a fantastic eye for making sure your dress fits you perfectly,’ says Jade. ‘We offer in-house alteration services along with our in-house bespoke services so we can make sure the dress fits you perfectly before you take it home from the studio.’

MAKE SURE YOU CAN DANCE

‘We suggest going for a dress that’s comfortable and has a relaxed fit such as an a-line dress, skirt and top separates or you can rock it up with a jumpsuit,’ says Jade. ‘Think about what length train you have as this might make the dress feel heavier. We can add a bustle to help you tie away your train though if you want to dance.’

BE 100% SURE BEFORE YOU SAY YES

Once you’ve said yes to the dress, there’s no turning back. So, if you aren’t 100% sure about the dress, try to sleep on it and see if you feel the same the next day. Or, if there is something small that you’d like changed or added to the design, don’t be shy to speak to your consultant about some alterations.

YOU CAN HIRE A DRESS

Don’t feel pressured to have to buy your dress if you’re on a budget. Many bridal boutiques now offer a hire service where you can hire your dream dress for your special day. Plus, it saves some space in your wardrobe too.
