After all, a wellness retreat immediately conjures images of relaxation and revitalising detoxes. But those imaginings don’t often include fighting disease, recovering from injuries or even losing weight – all of which can be achieved at Sereniti.

Here are six holistic therapies you can enjoy at Sereniti Salt Retreat and the incredible health benefits they can bring…

What is salt therapy?

Halotherapy – also known as salt therapy – is a holistic, drug-free, natural therapy which uses micro-particles of salt to promote better health.

Having replicated the natural microclimate of a salt cave by dispersing saline aerosol in a high concentration within a room where the walls and floors are covered in salt, Sereniti Salt Retreat now lay claim to the North East’s first halotherapy treatment room.

How does salt therapy work?

Simply sit inside the salt room for 45 minutes, relax and breathe in the fine salt. Each particle acts as an antibacterial agent, dissolving bacteria and pollutants lodged in your respiratory tract. You’ll then either cough these up later or they will be expelled during the metabolic processes, via the bloodstream.

What are the benefits of salt therapy?

Because salt therapy directly targets the respiratory system, the treatment is particularly known to help alleviate the symptoms of lung-related ailments, such as COPD, asthma, bronchitis and, more recently, long Covid.

But the benefits don’t end there. Salt therapy can also benefit the following conditions:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Asthma
  • Sinusitis
  • Plural plaques
  • Bronchitis
  • Smoking related issues
  • Sleeping disorders
  • Allergies
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Acne
  • Dermatitis
  • Common colds/viruses
  • Anxiety

What is hyperbaric therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) pressurises oxygen so that it will dissolve directly into the blood plasma and bring about a wide range of cellular, biochemical and physiological benefits. In a nutshell, HBOT is a trusted, non-invasive way of increasing the oxygen levels in the organs and tissue of our body.

How does hyperbaric therapy work?

Think about a bottle of pop; the pressure inside the unopened bottle reduces the size of the CO2 bubbles so that the gas can dissolve in the liquid. But as soon as you open the bottle and release that pressure, the size of those bubbles increase – making them visible.

It’s very similar with HBOT. In the treatment room, you’ll breathe in oxygen under a high-pressure environment using a mask for between 30 and 60 minutes; the gas molecules, having been reduced in size, dissolve in your blood plasma when breathed in. This increases the delivery of oxygen to any inflamed or injured tissue, while also enhancing the functionality of our organs and cells.

What are the benefits of hyperbaric therapy?

As well as getting extra oxygen to any injuries or damaged tissue (helping it to heal faster), HBOT also reduces swelling and inflammation while it boosts your immune system, reducing the risk of infection.

Pretty neat, right? But HBOT also has a whole host of other benefits:

  • Improved immune health
  • Speeds up injury recovery
  • Benefits neurological issues
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Boosts energy
  • Stimulates the formation of new blood vessels
  • Stimulates nerve regeneration
  • Reduces risk of heart attack
  • Helps with diabetic retinopathy
  • Repairs skin damage
  • Helps improve blood sugar
  • Improves brain function and repairs brain tissue
  • Promotes closure of non-healing wounds
  • Reduces brain oedema and decreases intracranial pressure
  • Increases stem cell production
  • Increases collagen production
  • Improves blood flow
  • Reduces inflammation and pain everywhere in the body

How much does hyperbaric therapy cost?

At Sereniti Salt Retreat, pricing for HBOT is as follows:

  • £40 per session
  • Block bookings of 5 sessions: £180
  • Block bookings of 10 sessions: £340

What is an infrared sauna?

This one really is what it says on the tin. While in a traditional sauna, you’re sitting in a hot room of 80°C–105°C, in an infrared sauna the heat is heating your body directly, with only 20% heating the air around you. Your body absorbs the heat and reacts to it.

How does an infrared sauna work?

It’s the treatment trend that has taken the London set by storm. But how does it work?

Well, you’ll relax in the sauna room for between 20 minutes and 40 minutes, where the gentle infrared heat will gradually raise your core body temperature. This stimulates your metabolism, lymphatic system, immune system and your cardiovascular system, which is where all the benefits of the treatment come in.

What are the benefits of an infrared sauna?

The stimulation to our metabolism, lymphatic, immune and cardiovascular systems can result in the following benefits:

  • Improved sleep
  • Relaxed
  • Detoxification
  • Weight loss
  • Relief from sore muscles
  • Relief from joint pain, such as arthritis
  • Clear and tighter skin
  • Improved circulation
  • Particularly beneficial for sufferers of chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia

What is PEMF?

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field, or PEMF, is a source of energy that repairs the body naturally. It enhances cells’ functionality, which plays a vital role in regenerating and rebuilding the body by restoring its energy. While it sounds modern, PEMF is actually something that has been practiced since ancient times.

How does PEMF work?

This non-invasive treatment simply requires you to lie on a mat and relax for around 20 minutes. In that time, low levels of electromagnetic energy are emitted towards your body using a machine. These are focused on areas where you need healing.

This electromagnetic energy helps to stimulate cell and tissue regeneration. With your cells recharged, they can then provide your body with the power it needs to improve your health.

What are the benefits of PEMF?

Because PEMF is a targeted treatment, it’s especially beneficial to injuries and topical conditions. That being said, PEMF is also a great way to achieve better mental health by encouraging greater relaxation and making you feel generally revitalised.

PEMF can be particularly helpful in treating the following conditions:

  • Arteriosclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Angina
  • Hypertension
  • Lymphatic
  • Tinnitus
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Asthma
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Gastric
  • Chrohns
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Parkinson’s
  • Sleep disorders
  • Panic attacks
  • Arthritis
  • Inflammation
  • Gout
  • Muscle pain

What is ozone sauna therapy?

Ozone sauna therapy is the combination of sauna and ozone gas. While sitting in a sauna box, ozone gas is introduced so that the warm, wet skin is exposed to the beneficial peroxides of the gas, causing anti-inflammatory and immune boosting effects.

It’s always important that the sauna allows for your head to stick out of the box, to prevent you from inhaling the ozone gas.

How does ozone sauna therapy work?

While seated within the sauna box for a 45 minute session, your body (below the head) will be surrounded by warm, medical-grade ozonated steam. As your body warms, your sweat glands and pores open. This allows toxins to be released and the ozone gas to neutralise them.

What are the benefits of ozone sauna therapy?

As well as detoxifying effects, this low risk, non-invasive treatment allows tissues to become more oxygenated, less inflamed and generally healthier. Ozone saunas effectively cleanses our body systems, restoring their ability to fight disease naturally.

The benefits of ozone sauna therapy include:

  • Firmer, clearer and smoother skin
  • Increased blood flow to cells and tissues
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Clears the lymphatic and cardiovascular system
  • Increases your protection against infection and illnesses
  • Oxidises lactic acid stored in the muscles to helps relax and increase flexibility
  • Treats joint pain and muscular diseases
  • Balances hormone and enzyme production
  • Strengthens memory and brain function
  • Provides stress relief
  • Positive effects on depression and anxiety disorders
  • Anti-inflammatory treatment
  • Helps improve circulation
  • Increased metabolism, assisting with weight loss

At Sereniti Salt Retreat, pricing for the ozone sauna is as follows:

  • £30 per session
  • Block bookings of 5 sessions: £125
  • Block bookings of 10 sessions: £220

What is red light therapy?

By exposing you to low levels of red or near infrared light – a type of energy that we can’t see but instead feel as heat – this treatment can help skin, muscle tissue and other parts of your body heal.

How does red light therapy work?

Simply stand in front of the red light therapy device for between 10 and 20 minutes to effectively ‘charge up’ your cells. By giving your cells this extra energy, they’re encouraged to regenerate faster: boosting your circulation, metabolism and collagen production in the process.

The more surface area you cover in your treatment, the more your cells absorb the light and the greater the benefits.

What are the benefits of red light therapy?

Red light therapy is known for the benefits it brings to our skin’s health. From increasing the production of collagen and reducing fine lines and wrinkles to alleviating the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis, red light therapy is now thought to be something of a skin saviour.

But there are more benefits to this therapy that what’s simply on the surface. Red light therapy has also been known to encourage the following:

  • Increased collagen production and skin repair
  • Improvement in skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis
  • Reduction in joint pain and inflammation
  • Optimised metabolism and energy levels
  • Benefits for thyroid health
  • Improved sleep
  • Enhanced weight loss
  • Faster muscle recovery
  • Better physical performance
  • Blood circulation
  • Reduction in stress
  • Alleviation of symptoms of fibromyalgia

How much does red light therapy cost?

At Sereniti Salt Retreat, pricing for red light therapy is as follows:

  • £20 per session
  • Block bookings of 5 sessions: £100
  • Block bookings of 10 sessions: £160
