In the heart of Northumberland lies the pretty village of Ponteland.

Home to a vibrant high street, a stunning riverside setting and winding country lanes, it’s the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

From boutique shops and bustling bars to cosy cafés and romantic restaurants, despite its refreshing rural setting, this Northumberland village has become a popular place to be at the weekend – and it’s not hard to see why!

We bring you some of the area’s finest (and newest) spots to eat, drink and enjoy some retail therapy with our guide to Ponteland…

Feeling peckish? Why not pop into Jan’s Kitchen to enjoy some freshly made goodness. Serving us homemade paninis, toasted wraps and jacket potatoes with a range of delicious fillings, here you can also get your cheeky caffeine fix.

There’s nothing that warms the soul more than the smell of freshly baked bread and pastries and Davidson of Darras Hall Bakery gives us just that. From Northumbrian hampers filled with local, carefully selected produce to homemade artisan bread boxes, the friendly team will give you an equally warm welcome when you pop by.

If you’re visiting this vibrant village for date night or a night out with your friends, just up the road is Tomahawk Steakhouse Ponteland serving us the finest Himalayan salt dry-aged steaks, Wagyu and other great local meat, fish and vegetarian dishes.

Fancy fine dining? Why not try neighbourhood restaurant and wine bar Eleven on the front street. Included in 2022’s Michelin Guide and with a weekly changing set menu, you’re sure to find something for everyone at this reasonably priced gem.

In the mood for something even more exotic? Get the taste of Asia right here in the heart of Northumberland. Indulge all your Chinese cravings with the relaxed atmosphere and elegant surroundings at New Rendezvous, specialising in authentic Cantonese and seafood cuisine dishes which are freshly prepared and cooked to perfection using only locally produced ingredients.

We’re so spoilt for choice for Chinese restaurants in Ponteland. Just off Main Street near Waitrose Ponteland is Princess Garden, whose menu offers an excellent variety of authentic Chinese and Cantonese food with a unique twist with their all-you-can-eat option.

Or, if you’re feeling something spicer to get your tastebuds tingling, we’ve found the finest Indian restaurant for you. After all, what better place to visit than the multi-award-winning Darras Hall restaurant, Haveli? Withcrafted dishes that combine classical and traditional flavours, here you’ll have a truly unique culinary experience. And that’s not forgetting Mogul Raj, who have produced a lively and exciting menu that brings plenty choice to your cuisine. One of the hardest decisions we have to make is what to eat, so why not speak to the friendly team to help point you in the right direction and try some new dishes?

We love anything filled with cheese and carbs here at HLN, so, of course, we know where the top Italian spots are in Ponteland. There’s no better way to experience the true authentic taste of Italian and Sardinian cuisine than at Fratelli Ponteland, which brings us a great selection of treats from traditional Italian cuisine to contemporary dishes, all able to be washed down with some fine wines and cheeky cocktails.

Want to embrace the traditional Italian feel for a family gathering or romantic evening? Pop into the family-run Rialtos for a warm and welcoming time while enjoying authentic pizza and pasta, succulent steaks or sumptuous seafood perfectly paired with a bottle of wine (or two).

A visit to this rural setting wouldn’t be complete without a visit to a country pub. Who doesn’t love a cosy night in the local and having a catch up over a cheeky pint or bottle of wine? We know just the places…

To the West of Ponteland, be sure to pop into The Blackbird, a stunningly secluded spot with all the trappings of a favourite country pub. From unforgettable food to the finest of ales and a large selection of spirits, you’ll enjoy all those proper pub vibes with an added taste of luxury here.

Located right in the heart of the village is The Diamond Inn, which not only gives a relaxed and friendly setting but also serves us a hearty and delicious selection of pub grub to satisfy our appetites.

Fancy a Sunday dinner? The Badger is right up your street. Oozing in rural charm and rustic character, this is the perfect backdrop to indulge in a lovely, hearty carvery washed down with cask ales and fine wines. (It’s menu throughout the week is also pretty cracking).

Who says you can’t have a dressy night out in Northumberland? Be wined and dined at Mambos Ponteland, providing a varied range of Mediterranean flavours, a cocktail lounge and bar – all the ingredients for a fantastic night out that’ll have you wanting to come back for more.

And just around the corner is Yolo Ponteland, a glamorous and trendy bar perfect for cocktails lovers and ideal for those long-awaited girls’ nights out. From espresso martinis to cosmopolitans, this is the spot to get your swanky cocktail fix — a perfect place for a special occasion.

It’s safe to say a bit of retail therapy can make everything feel so much better. So, whether you’re after a gift for a loved one or fancy treating yourself, this dainty village has a wide range of boutique shops for you.

Nothing beats a day out to the garden centre. And Dobbies gives us all our gardening goodies, heavenly homeware and gorgeous gifts that we need. And did you know they even host their own afternoon teas in their café?

There’s nothing worse than when you leave buying a gift until the last minute. This is where these gorgeous gift shops come to our rescue. Carousel Gifts makes our lives so much easier when picking a gift. And it’s not just gifts that Carousel sells; they can make any occasion extra special with their unique collection of cards, helium balloons and partywear for your loved ones.

Inside Pennie Pieces, you’ll find a selection of gifts, jewellery, cards and clothes perfect for treating your special person. But they also offer a unique upcycled pre-loved furniture stock to bring something into your home that none of your friends will have. So, be sure to check them out!

Talking about upcycled furniture, there’s definitely nothing unloved at Aubury Interiors. The team of passionate interior designers will liven up your home in no time. From bespoke, made-to-measure curtains and window treatments to quality soft furnishings such as cushions, headboards and bed throws, they offer a range of in-house manufacturing services, making your home somewhere you’ll be proud of.
