If you’re an animal lover, then look no further. There’s nothing better than breathing in some fresh country air during your downtime. But this mixed with giving something back and receiving love from some furry friends is such a rewarding way to spend your spare time.

Situated right in the heart of Newcastle, much-loved visitor attraction Pets’ Corner in Jesmond Dene is looking for a Volunteer Keeper to help with the care of their animals, engage with the public and help with site general care and maintenance.

Or, if you aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, sign up to become a Yard Assistant with Washington Riding Centre which involves mucking out stables, catching and turning out horses, grooming and tacking up and untacking the horses. They are also after Riding Session Volunteers to help lead/sidewalk and assist riders to mount and dismount during lessons.

If you’re passionate about bringing people closer to nature so they learn to understand, value and protect it, Northumberland Wildlife Trust is looking for a Reserve Warden at Northumberlandia.

Want to help educate people on the history and heritage of our region? Then these volunteering opportunities are ideal for you. Whether you have a passion for past times, wisdom for writing or a lot of love for locomotives, we’ve found some positions that will tickle your fancy.

From becoming a Writing Mentor at the Live Theatre teaching children and young people to help them to write their stories, explore ideas and use their imagination to helping with Promotion and Studio Maintenance at Chilli Studios, there are plenty of opportunities in Newcastle for those who love the arts.

If you’re interested in keeping our iconic local history alive by educating all generations, then why not sign up as a Tour Guide at Victoria Tunnel? Our region is famous for its heritage of locomotives and Stephenson Steam Railway has dozens of volunteering roles available. From a Passenger Guard to Track Maintenance and Tea Room Caterers and a Diesel Driver, there’s something for all ages and abilities to do here.

Here at HLN, we’re all about empowering and inspiring women. But these women’s charities go above and beyond to help women who are less fortunate, and here’s how you can help them support other women in your community.

Smart Works is on a mission to give women the confidence they need to reach their full potential, secure employment and find new opportunities in life.  With an Interview Coach, Stylist Volunteer and Admin and Fashion Assistant roles just waiting for you, it’s your time to start giving something back.

If you’re naturally filled with enthusiasm, and empathy and want to help deliver fun and inspiring sessions to young girls and women, apply to become a Learning Support Assistant at Building Futures East’s projects,Sew Sisters and Riverside Roots, or an Activity Leader for Girls Friendly Society in Sunderland and Blyth.

For those who have a good sense of fun, energy and care, volunteering with children is perfect for you. Whether you’re wanting to become Play Session Assistant for under 5-year-olds at St Martin’s Centre, support young visually impaired young people over the summer holidays at Useful Vision or sign up to be a Creativity Club Volunteer helping children explore their interests with Success4All at Blakelaw in Newcastle and Meadow Well in North Shields, why not sign up today?

If you have a big heart, caring nature and love to chat, becoming a befriender to an older person will be so rewarding for you. Help to stop an elderly person from feeling lonely and isolated by applying to become a Befriender at Caring Hands, Welfare Volunteer at The People’s Kitchen in Newcastle or sign up for this Befriending role at Dovecot Residential & Nursing Home in Gateshead.
