First thing’s first. There are watches, and then there are watches in life, and investing in a watch as a sentimental gift requires a bit of research.
First of all, it’s all about the personal details and taste, obviously. You should be pretty familiar with your dad’s style but functionality is key here, so take these points into consideration too.
When it comes to a watch, size matters…
Watches come in all shapes and sizes – there isn’t a typical case diameter and it’s important to consider as it impacts, ultimately, how comfortable it is to wear. A typical watch has a case diameter of between 34-44mm.
If you dad has slight wrists, 34-40mm is a good shout. Whereas if your dad is a larger fellow with thick wrists, opt for a case diameter of 44-46mm. 40-44mm is considered the average size.
Cost
Secondly, price is important. Because expensive doesn’t always mean better when it comes to watch quality. A high-quality investment watch doesn’t have to cost a year’s salary.
Whilst it’s true that all watches essentially do the same job – tell the time – there’s a reason that high-value watches come at a higher price point. Here are a couple of the key features to consider:
Craftsmanship
Watches that are more than £1000 (and are sold by a reputable jewellery brand) have likely been meticulously crafted by renowned watchmakers using top quality materials that will last lifetimes.
These watches feel different on the wrist and will be robust, made to stand the test of time and continuous wear.
Materials
The material used to create the watch face varies significantly between cheap and luxury watches.
Sapphire crystal is the most premium product used for expensive watch faces. It’s near impossible to break or scratch, meaning your investment gift will last for decades without losing its beauty.
Metal, leather or material strap?
Metal straps are more durable and look great on large wrists if fitted correctly, whereas leather straps are considered more conventional for a dressy watch and are (slightly) more susceptible to wear and tear over time.
Material straps are really comfortable for everyday wear – perfect if your dad never takes it off.
