Urban, unique, united – our guide to the perfect day out at Hoults Yard

Home on the edge of the Ouseburn, Hoults Yard is Newcastle’s first dynamic business village and is thriving with creatives, independents and talent.

As soon as you pull up to the Yard, you can just feel the buzz of community spirit among this eclectic mix of industries at every turn. We’re talking everything from a quirky 18-hole crazy golf course to the left to a luxurious beauty salon on the right, plus plenty of vibrant shops and eateries serving up some the finest scran in Newcastle dotted around the whole space.

Set on the former site of Malings Pottery, a jam jar factory built in the 1870s, the Yard was taken over by the Hoult family in 1948 and this homegrown feel to the environment pervades throughout the charming, collaborative community you can find there today. You really feel part of something whenever you visit Hoults Yard which, quite frankly, we love.

Whether it’s always been on your list to visit, or you’ve already popped in a few times before but maybe haven’t yet had the full tour, we’ve pulled together our guide to the perfect day out in Hoults Yard to make sure you don’t miss a thing.

HLN TOP TIP: Parking at Hoults Yard is free for the first hour, but your car is clocked by a camera when you arrive and leave, so make sure you either pay for parking at one of the meters for extra time or you don’t exceed an hour to avoid getting a parking ticket. (We’ve learnt from our mistakes!)

Studio 28

2 Cobblestone Court, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 2HL

What better way to start your day of exploring Hoults Yard than by tasting the beautifully hand-crafted selection of sweet treats, scones and sandwiches (which you can wash down with a freshly brewed cuppa) at Studio 28? All we can say is that these chocolates almost look too good to eat. Almost. Artisan chocolatier and patisserie chef Naomi is on a journey to create edible art – and the creations coming out of her kitchen certainly are masterpieces.

But the hardest decision you’ll face is what to order. From Studio 28’s signature bonbons – which are each beautifully hand-painted and filled with ganache or liquid caramel – to delightfully indulgent desserts like chocolate caramel chouxs and orange glazed cinnamon buns, there’s surely something to satisfy, whatever you fancy.

2Knives Kitchen

Unit 43, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 2HL

Who doesn’t love a good ol’ juicy burger? A little taste of America is now in the Ouseburn Valley, thanks to this old-school diner, which serves up the best of US-themed food – including stacks of maple syrup pancakes, belter burgers and Key Lime and pecan pies. Slide into one of the booths here, and soak up the relaxed, comfortable vibes here while enjoying one of the local, national or Belgian beers they have on tap. Guess what? As the name may suggest, 2Knives has its own butcher and smokehouse, too – so you really are getting fresher than fresh.

Said by many to serve ‘the best burgers in Newcastle’ (and people don’t just throw out that title lightly), there’s only one way to find out what makes these patties so special and that’s by visiting 2Knives yourself. With long-time favourites like the Haggis Hunter (a beef patty with grilled haggis and all the fillings), and grilled peppers and squash mix flatbread wraps for you veggies, can it get any better than burgers and chilled beers? We don’t think so!

Cake Stories

The Clock Tower, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 2HL

With colours that pop, cakes that slay and perfectly Instagramable interiors, Cake Stories Hoults Yard is a unique spot that you’ll want to visit again and again, (we certainly do). It’s hard to miss them with their quirky shipping container lounges, complete with a life-sized Zebra outside. But what is, for us, even more attractive is that Cake Stories is driven by a desire to connect people through cake. And, really, what’s not to love about that?

From Biscoff and Oreo flavoured Brownios (their own delicious cookie/brownie sandwich creation), to Macho Pistachio Blondies and Peanut Butter Cookie Dough, you can’t help but treat yourself at Cake Stories. Plus, there are even plenty of options for you vegans and veggies. But it’s not just sweet treats that Cake Stories serves – there’s also a range of breakfast and lunch dishes, plus their now-famous afternoon tea (with optional fizz) to choose from, too. So, once you’re settled at your table, you really don’t need to move all day.

HLN TOP TIP: Make sure you pop by for their Sunday Sessions with live performances from local musicians, sweet treats and delicious beverages. Sounds like one soulful Sunday to us.

Full Circle Brewery Co

167 Walker Road, Hoults Yard, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 2HL

If you’re a craft beer lover, then look no further than the award-winning Full Circle Brewery for a perfect pint-filled pitstop during your day at Hoults Yard. The brewery’s glass-fronted taproom overlooks the stainless-steel vats used to produce the beer that’s poured directly from the taps into your glass. From IPAs, stouts, lagers and sours, and basically everything in-between, there’s nothing here that won’t float your beer boat. But if beer isn’t your thing, there’s also an extensive menu of premium spirits, award-winning wines, delicious cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages to choose from, too.

But Full Circle isn’t just a hip drinking spot; they’re also a hub for entertainment. From quiz nights to brewery tours and special Octoberfest celebrations, keep an eye out for the taproom events listed on their website. And if you’re like us and get the munchies after a bev, the taproom has a wood-burning pizza oven producing made-to-order Neapolitan pizza. If you’re wanting something to take home with you, The Pip Stop sits under the taproom and sells a selection of Full Circle cans, craft beers, spirits and award-winning wines. So, the fun can last all night.

HLN TOP TIP: Whether you want to book a private or corporate event or fancy taking the team away from the office, the brewery has a beautiful event space – the Tank Room, which can host around 25 people seated with custom packages available.

Unit 38, The Clock Tower, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 2HL

Oracle Aesthetics

Danu Studios, Unit 38, The Clock Tower, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 2HL

Although we all want to age gracefully, we still want to feel confident in our own skin – which is why, sometimes, we need that little boost to keep our skin looking youthful, plump and radiant. Inside Danu Studios is a new pop-up business visiting every Saturday: Oracle Aesthetics. Oracle brings high-end, advanced facial aesthetics to the Ouseburn, with the aim of having subtle and anti-ageing results by enhancing your natural beauty and making you feel confident in your own skin.

Plus, Oracle use one of the best and most advanced fillers in the world, Teoxane, so you can only expect the best results.

Teapot 1, The Pattern Shop, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle NE6 2HL

There’s nothing like a spot of retail therapy to brighten up your day. As soon as you step into this home decorator’s haven you’ll feel all those positive vibes. At every turn, there are shelves and tables stacked with bright and cheerful homeware, gifts and treats that you won’t find anywhere else in the North East and a section dedicated to wellness and self-care – we can guarantee that you’ll find yourself ‘accidentally’ filling your basket up with some cheeky gifts for yourself.

And that’s before we’ve even mentioned the huge dried flower bar, where you can create your own bespoke bouquets with the help of Muscari’s talented owner Amy. From autumn wreath workshops to Christmas wreath workshops and bridal party dried flower bouquet workshops, stay tuned for events on Muscari’s website. Or if you aren’t naturally blessed with creative talents but still seek a bouquet to brighten up your home, there are always selections to choose from that Amy has put together herself to save you the job.

Golf Fang Newcastle

The Clay Shed, Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 2HL

We can’t think of a better way to finish off your day at Hoults Yard than with some hijinks and utter hilarity. Formerly known as Ghetto Golf Newcastle, the newly named Golf Fang isn’t your average crazy golf course. Oh, no. This adult-only, seriously twisted 18-hole mini golf course – complete with its own cheeky cocktail bar, live DJ sets and bona fide cathedral of neon graffiti – offers pure entertainment for you and your friends, family or workmates, where you’ll find something new (and undoubtedly kooky) to explore at every turn.

Each hole offers up a unique and Instagram-worthy photo opportunity. From a trip to the Jeremy Kyle show to finding yourself inside a life-sized teddy picker, you’ll be surprised at the creative talent used to bring this crazy course to life. But all that golfing is thirsty work, which is why their fully stacked cocktail menu is a godsend. There’s also some sumptuous street food to tuck into if you’re feeling peckish – we’re talking lasagne bites, loaded fries and smoked chicken wings. You know, only the good stuff.

HLN TOP TIP: If you book The Swipe Right package, you get a full round of golf, cocktail or two beers and 20% off selected food items, all for just £19.50.
