Spoiler alert – we are beyond excited to start Christmas shopping already.

The twinkling lights and dark nights; the rosy cheeks and warmth indoors away from the frosty air; the buzz of shoppers wrapped up in scarves and hats intermingling with battery-operated festive jingles and sleigh bells.

It’s a magical time. But it can also be pretty stressful.

December’s a short month when you have to get all your gifts home and wrapped before the 24th. And there’s always that one relative who seems impossible to buy for, no matter how many shops you visit.

Which is why a one-stop shop for all our Christmas presents, decorations, wrapping and gift food would be the answer to our festive prayers. Somewhere unique and wholesome; where quality is a given and help is always on hand; somewhere you can shop ‘til you drop and then refuel with a winter warmer or two; somewhere all the family are at home and where you can really feel that Christmas magic.

Somewhere like Cowell’s Garden Centre.

See, the thing about Cowell’s is that they’re so much more than a garden centre. Sure, they have one of the biggest selection of flowers, house plants, outdoor plants and garden accessories in the North East. And yes, they also have a passionate team of qualified horticulturalists with more than 40 years in the industry, a national reputation for the quality of their plants, and a trophy cabinet bursting with awards from all manner of gardening gurus, including the Chelsea Flower Show, no less.

But at Cowell’s you’ll also find that stylish reed diffuser you’ve been after for your Mum, or that perfect book for Dad. That handbag you know your best friend will love, the artisan spice set your hubby will cook up a storm with, that quirky Christmas tree decoration that’ll make your Grandma giggle. Whatever you’re after, Cowell’s has it all.

As a small, family firm, Cowell’s pride themselves on selling a wide range of unique, bespoke and often downright quirky products you won’t find anywhere else – and all with a personal service that includes one-to-one advice from their friendly team, who (we reckon) are even happier, handier and more helpful than Santa’s elves.

Plus, when it comes to style, statement and sustainability, plants for presents really are on everyone’s Christmas list, (whether they know it yet or not).

We caught up with Lynsey Crofts, Office Manager at Cowell’s Garden Centre, to find out just what we can expect from the garden centre Newcastle is most proud of this festive season…

Tell us what Christmas shopping is like at Cowell’s.

We offer a range of decorations, both modern and traditional, across five different themes, so there’s something for every style and taste.

Each year, our buyers manage to find some quirky tree decorations, perfect for adding a bit of fun into your festivities. My favourite this year is a gin bottle tree ornament! We also have a great range of lights and trees, both artificial and real.

Gifts wise, we promote ‘Plants for Presents’ and make suggestions of seasonal plants for both the home and garden that make ideal gifts for loved ones. We also have a range of gifts for all the family, plus tons of cards and wrapping, I’m pretty sure some people could do all their Christmas shopping with us!

You sell more than plants – tell us about your homeware and gifts too?

We have some stylish candles and diffusers, as well as a range of homeware from Wrendale Designs, perfect for the ‘Country Kitchen’ look.

When it comes to gifts, we have books and jigsaws for all ages, winter warmers such as slippers, scarfs and socks, and gorgeous handbags from Katie Loxton, to mention just a few. If you’re looking for stocking fillers or secret Santa presents, our selection of stationery, toiletries and sweet treats are ideal.

What are your favourite Christmas plants to decorate your home?

You can’t go wrong with a traditional Poinsettia to bring the feel of Christmas into the home. We’ll have them in a range of colours, including the ever-popular red varieties.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, Anthurium have beautiful, long-lasting flowers in several colours, while Cyclamen offer bold, bright colours or clean, crisp white.

How does Cowell’s dress up for Christmas?

Christmas begins in the car park at Cowell’s, where we have lit trees and seasonal planters. Inside, our Christmas decoration displays offer inspiration and our friendly team are on hand to help you select the items from our shelves to create the looks yourself at home.

There are decorations throughout the centre and, come December, our favourite place is the real Christmas tree section. Sheltered under the cover of our canopy, the smell of Christmas can be found amongst the freshly cut trees. This is also where you’ll find our coffee partner, Loki & Bean, serving up all your favourite winter drinks.

Do you have any special Christmas events planned?

The weekend of the 3rd and 4th December is our ‘Real Tree Weekend’ – the perfect weekend to come along with your family and choose your freshly cut, real tree.

Our expert team will be on hand to help you choose the perfect type, size and shape of tree for your space. This is the weekend when we’ll have the best availability of fresh trees and wreaths.

To celebrate, we will be giving away a mini tree with every real tree purchased. These mini trees are perfect for decorating a hallway or child’s room and help fill the whole house with Christmas cheer.

If you had to pick out presents from Cowell’s collection for the following relatives, what would you choose and why?

A Pomegranate & Pear Candle from our Marmalade of London range. They smell divine and my Mum always has a gorgeous, scented candle on the go, so I’d love to treat her to one of these hand poured, indulgent candles.

I will be giving her a Poinsettia as well; she normally opts for a traditional red variety but loved my cream one last year, so I’ll choose one of those for her.

My partner loves to cook and experiment in the kitchen (using every pot and utensil we own!), so I’ve chosen one of our Spice Kitchen spice tins. They hold a selection of artisan spices and come beautifully packaged.

Best friend

An Edge Company vase. She has just moved into a new apartment and one of these sleek, stylish vases will look perfect with her contemporary décor.

Secret Santa

I always think food is a great option for a Secret Santa gift, so I’ll be making up a mini hamper of goodies. There’s plenty to choose from in our range, including local Tweedside honey, savoury treats from The Garlic Farm and tasty teas from the English Tea Shop.
