When it comes to cleansing our faces after a long day, it can be so easy to just turn to our trusty face wipes and think the job is done – but how wrong are we?

Facial wipes actually leave behind residue, oil and excess makeup which may lead to clogged pores, breakouts and signs of ageing. That’s why we need to invest in the right facial cleanser for us.

Beautiful Betty is here to our rescue. We caught up with owner, director and our skincare saviour, Haley to find out the importance of properly cleansing our face.

HOW TO WASH YOUR FACE?

  • Apply the product in one movement covering the entire face and neck (depending on what you choose you may need to apply a little water to emulsify the product)
  • Gently work the product into the skin to gently lift the surface oil and bacteria
  • Remove the formula with a damp cloth, a splash of water or reusable cleansing pads

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CLEANSE YOUR FACE PROPERLY?

Cleansing is the first step to treating your skin concerns and ensuring the next steps work as well as they should. The benefits of cleansing are endless when using the right cleanser.

  • Helps to prevent breakouts
  • Hydrates your skin
  • Slows down the signs of ageing
  • Improves circulation and skin radiance
  • Encourages skin cell renewal

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR FACE?

Every day; morning and evening without exception.

Morning routine: This removes the previous night’s oil. I use a balm and cloth but some people like a cleansing foam or gel which is removed with water, it’s a little more invigorating.

Nighttime routine:  We want to remove makeup and the build-up of oil, bacteria and dirt which we collect throughout the day, so choose a different facial cleansing oil or face cleansing balm to work deeper in the skin and lift makeup more easily.

WHAT IS DOUBLE CLEANSING AND DO YOU RECOMMEND IT?

Yes, absolutely. The first cleanse removes the dirt and oils collected during the day and the second cleanse works deeper into the skin. If you suffer from specific skin concerns the double cleanse will help to unblock pores, remove surface bacteria and calm any irritation or inflammation and support the natural skin barrier function which protects against environmental stresses and aggressors.

DOES A FACIAL CLEANSING BRUSH REALLY WORK?

A facial cleansing brush can be abrasive, and overuse can do more damage than good. Often people get addicted to the feeling of a newly ‘buffed’ skin surface which initially feels soft, ‘glowy’ and will help your makeup sit well. However, this can be short-lived, using a brush to cleanse your face can damage the acid mantle of the skin which can leave it compromised, sore and with more problems than when you started. Facial skin is delicate and responds better to gentle cleansing with the right product used in the right way.

ARE THERE ANY INGREDIENTS IN CLEANSING PRODUCTS THAT WE SHOULD AVOID?

This depends on skin type. If you suffer from acne, essential oils, synthetic perfumes, SLS (sodium laurel sulphate) and specific types of alcohol should be avoided. Alcohol can be used as a preservative or as a localised ingredient in spot treatments, in those cases, it’s not bad. But when used as a main ingredient in toners, exfoliators and cleansers it can be drying and stripping which causes irritation.
