7 hidden gems in Gateshead
From art deco-inspired cocktail spots and cheesecake to die for, to a Middle Eastern coffee shop and dog-friendly bars.
Gateshead is an often overlooked area if you live in Newcastle.
With a city centre buzzing with culture, it’s easy to put off venturing across the Tyne. But Gateshead has so much more to offer than just Saltwell Park and By the River Brew Co.
From exciting new openings to local Low Fell favourites, here are seven hidden gems you’ll want to discover in Gateshead…

The Bonny Comet
490 Durham Road, Low Fell, Gateshead, NE9 6HU
The Bonny Comet brings a breath of fresh air to the Low Fell food scene through their ‘sip & scran’. The art-deco-inspired, lush green interior is as sophisticated and refreshing as their margaritas – which are, arguably, among some of the best in the North East. Perfectly balanced, light and vibrant.
Run by local lass Hayley Kell, this not-so-hidden gem has a menu offering fresh, seasonal and packed-full-of-flavour dishes served from 12pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Their all-day menu features an extensive list of nibbles, small plates including Moules Marinière and Butter Poached Sea Trout Salad and large plates such as a Chicken Kyiv with creamed spring greens and truffle mash and Pork Fillet with tenderstem broccoli, creamed potato and pigs head croquette – we’re truly salivating.
They’ve also built up quite the reputation for their Sunday roasts, but get in there early as they are often fully booked!
With plenty of veggie, vegan and gluten-free options available too, you know everyone is catered for whether you are after a light bite of a three-course feast.
See you there?

Gilbert & Smith’s
413 Durham Road, Low Fell, Gateshead, NE9 5AN
Gilbert & Smith’s is a popular Low Fell joint with a friendly, family-run vibe. The smart, slightly industrial interior is cosy and welcoming, offering a wide selection of beers, gins and cocktails at a reasonable price. They serve up Whitley Bay Brew Co. beers which are crafted in a small brewery behind their (appropriately named) parent pub, The Brewery.
If you’re thinking of visiting during a public holiday – such as Halloween, Christmas or Valentine’s Day – you’ll see for yourself the effort they put into their decorations! Every other Thursday they put on a popular pub quiz. Oh, and they’re dog friendly, too.

The Staiths Café
1 Autumn Drive, Gateshead NE8 2BZ
Positioned with a view overlooking the Tyne, this popular Gateshead café is tucked away off the main footpath. You could easily walk past it without realising if you weren’t in the know, (although the buzz of queueing hungry locals on a weekend might give it away).
Inside has a cool, industrial loft feel and offers coffee, savoury and sweet food. Their menu has dishes titled ‘I don’t know’ (sandwiches or toasties) and ‘I don’t care’ (beans on toast). These have been known to confuse new staff, much to the amusement of the regulars.
By the tills, they have a small shop that sells local produce such as North Chocolates and Staiths Honey. You can also buy artwork, cards and posters from local artists.

This is one of the best-kept secrets among Gateshead locals. Victoria Bar & Kitchen has arguably got the best beer garden in the area and is perfect for those sunny afternoon pints with pals.
Although it’s on the very outward edge of Low Fell, towards the Angel, this dog-friendly pub serves classic pub grub at affordable prices and incredibly decent portion sizes. The interior (and exterior for that matter) is quirky and full of personality. This hidden gem is definitely one worth making a trip for.

When it comes to coffee shops, Gateshead runs the gamut – but Café Under the Spire is a little different from the rest.
