A month in the life of our editor – August
From tasting menus at Hjem to birthday celebrations - here's what Laura has been up to in August.
With September just a couple of days away, it really feels like the end of summer is upon us now. But I’m not complaining – I’m so ready for autumnal vibes now.
Between celebrating my birthday, our busiest month ever at High Life North and lots of life admin, August has been a blast… here’s what I got up to.

THE OPENING OF CAFE MERCY
Last week Rosie and I popped to the opening of Cafe Mercy – described as ‘Grey Street’s newest escape from the chaos’.
Inspired by Ibiza/Miami vibes, Cafe Mercy is the light, airy and bright sister venue from the Mother Mercy team.
Serving Mediterranean-inspired spritzes and cocktails, as well as charcuterie boards and coffee, this is one to check out on your next visit to Newcastle city centre.
Check out the website and view the menu here.

BATTLE ROYALE AT WYLAM BREWERY
I can’t believe that last Sunday was actually my first-ever Wylam Brewery food battle – it was SO good.
There was so much choice but the standout food for me was Scream for Pizza’s sausage pizza with tomato vodka sauce and Hot Sin chicken wings from Drum ‘n’ Thigh.

VINOPERFECT RADIANCE FACIAL AT JESMOND BEAUTY CLINIC
My new favourite facial to have the morning of an event or night out – no redness or inflammation, just perfect skin.
Jesmond Beauty Clinic has recently introduced facials from French skincare brand Caudalie and the Vinoperfect facial is a treatment designed to correct the complexion and restore vitality and radiance to the skin.
They use massage techniques to awaken the luminosity of the skin – on your face but also on shoulders, arms and feet which is heavenly.
The Vinoperfect mask that they used in the treatment is a new favourite of mine – it’s exfoliating and brightening leaving skin feeling baby-soft.

A NIGHT AT RESTAURANT HJEM
My birthday celebrations kicked off in style this year with dinner, bed and breakfast at Restaurant Hjem – the best raffle prize I’ve won in my life.
Starting with a couple of cocktails, we had a front-row seat in the restaurant watching the incredible team prepare the tasting menu which was so delicious.
We stayed over in one of the lodges which meant no designated driver and a delicious Scandinavian-style breakfast using local ingredients the following morning.
