When it comes to sourcing unique Christmas gifts, you can’t beat going out for some traditional festive shopping in a market town like Alnwick.

With a range of independent shops selling everything from jewellery to artisan food and drink, you’re guaranteed to pick up something for everyone on your list – all whilst enjoying a festive day out.

When it gets dark, head to Alnwick Garden’s Christmas Light Trail which is guaranteed to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Northumberland County Council is committed to supporting local businesses by offering free parking in its car parks, all day, every day.

HLN TOP TIP: Download the new Visit Northumberland app to take advantage of a range of offers from Alnwick-based businesses here.

FOOD & DRINK

Turnbulls Alnwick

Head to the Market Place to pick up a festive hamper full of locally sourced treats at A Taste of Northumbria Stocking Anarchy Brew Co, Alnwick Legendary Dark Rum, Holy Island Gin and more, this is the place to stock up on spirits that you won’t get anywhere else.

Turnbull’s Northumbrian Food is the ultimate farm shop destination to stock up on foodie finds. Established since 1880, this regional favourite offers the best of Northumberland’s produce in its much-loved food hall, as well as a range of homewares from candles to cute gifts.

The Chocolate Spa Alnwick

For those with a sweet tooth, The Chocolate Spa is a must-visit. It stocks more than 40 varieties of chocolates, traditionally made fudge, nougat, Turkish delight and more – the Wonderfully White chocolate box is on our Christmas list this year.

And if cheese in your thing, look no further than The Cheese Room. The owner offers a fantastic experience talking you through the different cheeses on offer, helping you to decide the perfect selection for any cheeseboard. Plus, you can enjoy breakfast and lunch here which is a cheese lover’s dream.

HOMEWARES

Brightwater Gallery Alnwick

From pop art prints to kooky ornaments, Penn Gallery stocks a range of unique pieces to surprise the art lover in your life.

Brightwater Gallery is a go-to for Geordie-based prints and one-of-a-kind ceramics – as well as local artisan jewellery.

For a treasure trove of affordable gifts in a gorgeously festive setting, Alnwick Vintage & Antique has two floors of its ‘pretty things’ to explore – and always has one of the best window displays in the town.

And whether it’s the eco-warrior, the chef or the gardener you’re shopping for, Proudlock House & Home is an Aladdin’s cave of homeware goodies to explore.

THE MOST UNIQUE GIFTS

Dovecote Northumberland

Ruby Tuesday packs a punch with a huge array of special gift options, from PJs to velvet accordion lamps and our favourite – the amber light crystal ball.

For everything under one roof, the iconic Robinson’s of Alnwick is a mini department store that has everything from clothing, the sweetest baby gifts and homewares.

To make a home smell incredible, Dovecote Northumberland is the place to visit. This all-natural fragrance house based in Alnwick offers a range of soy candles, diffusers, bath and body lotions as well as gift sets. Our favourite scent is Amber to create the ultimate luxurious home vibe.

Conroy’s Jewellery Boutique is a magpie’s haven. From cute charms to luxury watches (as well as pre-owned affordable options), this is the perfect place to find gifts that will be treasured for a lifetime.

ENJOYING ALNWICK

While you’re shopping in Alnwick, make a day of it by visiting the best bars, restaurants and visitor attractions that the town has to offer.

HLN TOP TIP: Check the Visit Northumberland app for the most up-to-date offers on food and drink.

Dirty Bottles Alnwick

The Dirty Bottles is a recently refurbished bar, kitchen and rooms which gives off real Harry Potter vibes. Sit by the roaring log fire with a cocktail and enjoy some dishes from a menu which has some of the highest reviews on Tripadvisor and Google.

Staying on the Harry Potter theme, Hallow and Crux describes itself as ‘wizardly and whimsical’. Refurbished in 2021, it offers four magically designed bedrooms and an award-winning restaurant adorned with hanging tapestries and lit by candlelight.

Lilidorei Alnwick

If you have children in tow, Lilidorei is the world’s largest play structure – and Christmas is its favourite time of year. Little ones can feed reindeer, listen to Lilidorians sing and of course, meet Father Christmas in a magical immersive experience.

And for all ages, the Light Trail at Alnwick Garden is the perfect way to round off the day. The walk takes approximately 45-minutes as The Alnwick Garden comes to life at night. Enjoy hot chocolate or mulled wine as you take in the beautiful light trail and get festive photos that will last forever.
