8 new openings in Newcastle, Sunderland and Hexham
Jesmond’s answer to Dishoom, cool new coffee hangouts and the return of the beloved wellness space in Sunderland – 2024 is off to a great start for our independent business scene.
OLIVE COFFEE COMPANY, NEWCASTLE QUAYSIDE
Inside Tactical Transformations (opposite Gino D’Acampo) – 56 Close, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 3RJ
We can’t wait to try this new dog-friendly Quayside hangout – serving up coffee, hot drinks, protein shakes and snacks. You’ll see some of our favourite local suppliers – organic milk from Acorn Dairies, fresh pastries from Batch Bakery and snacks from A Taste of Italy. Plus, the vibes look immaculate.
CHAKH DHOOM, JESMOND
127 Osborne Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE2 2TB
Love Dishoom? You’ll love this new Indian street food restaurant on Osborne Road. Chakh means ‘to taste’ and Dhoom means ‘smoke’ – using fresh and flavoursome native spices and ingredients alongside age-old cooking techniques. They’re promising magic and we think they’ll deliver. Try two-courses for £15 until 31st January.
WELLNESS SPACE, SUNDERLAND
Unit 35, Business Innovation Centre, Sunderland, SR5 2TA
We’re SO happy to see that our friends at Wellness Space in Sunderland have managed to find a forever home after they had to close their lovely studio during the pandemic. Opening on Monday 29th January, the space will have new teachers, new classes and a new schedule in what we know will be a beautiful space.
KOJI, SUNDERLAND
High Street West, Sunderland, SR1
Ramen, gyoza, bao, fried chicken, cocktails – Sunderland’s newest restaurant Koji has been all over our social media for weeks and it looks insane. Just across the road from Sunderland Empire, it’s walk-ins only, but don’t worry, they have a cool bar if you have to wait for a table. Trust us, the ramen (the restaurant’s speciality) looks worth any wait.
ACROPOLIS, METROCENTRE
Above TK Maxx, Blue Mall
This independent Greek street food business has grown from one site in 2016 to multiple venues across the region. The latest new opening is in Metrocentre, so you can get your fix of spinach pie, Greek platters and their iconic wraps after a day shopping.
VEGANATOMY, HEATON
226a Chillingham Road, Heaton, NE6 5LP
Speaking of North East foodie success stories, the lovely Zoë at Veganatomy will be opening the doors to her brand new premises on Saturday 20th January at 11.00am. She’ll be serving up her iconic vegan sushi selection as well as Bánh Mì and rice bowls. It’s take-out only but her neighbours ELDERBEER are welcoming you to grab a drink and take your food next door to enjoy. Now this is local business supporting eachother.
SNAP RECORDS, HEXHAM
Market Place, Hexham, NE46 1XQ
If you love vinyl records, this will be a haven for you. Moira and Jamie opened their new store in Hexham marketplace last week. Pop in for a browse through thousands of vinyls and check out Hexham’s ever-increasing independent shopping scene.
1b BOOKS, HEATON
1b Bolingbroke St, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE6 5PH
Another new addition to Heaton, 1b Books can be found just around the corner from HLN favourites Zees and 109 General Store on Heaton Park Road.
Selling both new and secondhand books, this brand-new bookshop opened just before Christmas and is a must-visit for book lovers.
HLN Top Tip: In need of a new book but not sure what you fancy? Owners Mandy and Kate have some great recommendations.
