Everything you need to know about the Restaurant Hjem pop-up in Fenwick Newcastle

PSA: Michelin-starred Restaurant Hjem is coming to Fenwick Newcastle this summer, giving diners a chance to experience the celebrated restaurant in the heart of Newcastle.

Monday – Thursday, 11.30am – 5.00pm 

Friday – Saturday, 11.30am – 7.00pm 

Sunday, 11.30am – 5.00pm

The menu

Hjem is famous for its traditional Scandinavian flavours and signature cooking style, created using the finest seasonal Northumbrian produce.

Diners at the Restaurant Hjem x Fenwick pop-up can enjoy either a frequently changing tasting menu or a la carte menu, made up of the team’s favourite dishes. All are made with high-quality ingredients sourced from local farms and gardens in Northumberland and cooked exclusively using Scandinavian techniques.  

Guests can expect some of Hjem’s signature dishes alongside new additions created exclusively for Fenwick. Options on the menu will include Gougeres filled with Doddington cheese cream, fried chicken with Kewpie mayo, and chicken liver parfait with brioche and Pedro Ximenez syrup. Dessert options will include freshly cooked doughnuts served with a semi-fredo of espresso and a waffle sandwich covered with miso caramel. Vegetarian, pescatarian, and vegan options are also available on request. 

All dishes can be beautifully paired with wine, selected to reflect the wine offering at Hjem. Many of the wines served will be available for purchase from the Fenwick Food Hall.

What makes the Restaurant Hjem x Fenwick collaboration so special?

Founded by husband and wife, Scandinavian-born Alex Nietosvuori and Northumbrian Ally Thompson-Nietosvuori, Hjem (pronounced “yem”), is both a Northumbrian and Scandinavian word for “home”. The celebrated restaurant can be found in the small village of Wall, near Hexham, tucked away within the popular hotel, The Hadrian Hotel.

After spending 20 years gaining experience across some of the top restaurants in Scandinavia and the UK, the couple felt ready to open their own restaurant, winning a Michelin Star in 2021 (making it the first Michelin-starred restaurant in Northumberland)

The 28-seat restaurant is notoriously hard to book and for Alex, the partnership means being able to cook for people who might not ordinarily choose or be able to visit Hjem in Northumberland – as well as being able to continue supporting small and local businesses and be part of a national department store

Hjem usually offers a tasting menu for diners, but for the first time as part of this collaboration, Hjem will offer an a la carte menu alongside the daily changing tasting menu at Fenwick Newcastle.
