BALTIC SHOP CREATES: ORIGAMI BAG

In this friendly sewing workshop, you’ll learn how to make your own geometric print origami bag under the guidance of textile designer Amy Trainor. Amy will show you how to thread a sewing machine, cut out an origami bag pattern, sew pattern pieces using the machine, fold the fabric using an origami technique, and add a sturdy handle. You’ll come away with a bright, bold bag that will hold all of your essentials when leaving the house. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners and all materials will be provided on the day.

Aptly taking place in the Black Gate of Newcastle Castle, you’ll get a glimpse into the medieval period that very few have seen before.

Get to know other amazing women on this free walk-and-talk through Jesmond Dene. Grab a cuppa and bite to eat at One Kitchen and Social before beginning the walk down to Pet’s Corner and the idyllic Jesmond Dene Falls. You’ll head back along Red Walk to where you started, enjoying more time to chat and end the week on a high note. Anyone who identifies as a woman is welcome, as are family members, friends, little ones in prams and pooches.

CARBONIFEROUS MONSTERS: 100MILLION YEARS BEFORE THE DINOSAURS

Ever wondered what life was like before the dinosaurs? In this astounding exhibition, you’ll be transported back to the Carboniferous period – 100 million years before dinos walked the earth. Visit tropical forests and swamps, encountering strange and vicious creatures along the way. We’re talking millipedes the length of crocodiles and scorpions the size of dogs! The mini-exhibition features 350 million-year-old original fossils, reconstructed prehistoric beasts and fascinating insight into what Durham and the Dales were like 300 million years ago.

As you wander through the exhibition, you’ll discover objects of astronomical importance designed in the North East, find out how technology is always evolving to uncover new realms in the universe and delve into the cutting-edge research that is happening right now in the region. This multi-sensory exhibition is as fascinating as it is informative, having been designed and curated alongside Newcastle University’s astrophysicists.
