Produced by 11Arches, Kynren, Bishop Auckland, is an epic outdoor theatre performance that takes you on a mesmerising journey through 2,000 years of English history, myth and legend. This incredible show is brought to life by over 1,000 volunteer cast and crew members, all coming together to create a world-class spectacle.

A SPECTACULAR SETTING

Performed on a sprawling seven-and-a-half-acre stage against the stunning backdrop of Auckland Castle, Kynren is truly a sight to behold. The show features magnificent sets, mass choreography, intense combat scenes, daring stunts, impressive horsemanship, breathtaking pyrotechnics and cutting-edge special effects, including state-of-the-art video projections.

THE STORY OF ARTHUR

Kynren’s narrative follows the adventures of Arthur, the son of a mining family, as he embarks on a time-travelling journey through history. The show brilliantly weaves together historical events, myths and legends, offering a spellbinding experience for all ages.

NEW FOR 2024: RETURN OF THE VIKINGS

This year, Kynren 2024 is introducing an exciting new pre-show experience: the Viking Village. Before the main event, you can explore an authentic 9th-century Viking settlement. Included in your Kynren ticket, the Viking Village offers a glimpse into the past with a working blacksmith’s forge, a cookhouse with a vegetable patch and a woodworker’s cottage. You’ll also meet some charming animal inhabitants like curly-haired Wensleydale sheep and Icelandic chickens.

THE PERFORMANCES

The shows run every Saturday night from 27th July to 14th September, each performance starting at sunset and concluding under the stars. These 90-minute spectacles are packed with drama, excitement and a host of thrilling scenes that’ll leave you on the edge of your seat.

AN AWARD-WINNING PRODUCTION

Since its debut in 2016, Kynren has received multiple awards and widespread acclaim. The production is a result of extensive training and dedication from its volunteer cast and crew, who work with industry specialists to perfect their skills. The show’s epic soundtrack, composed by Nathan Stornetta (who has worked with composer Hans Zimmer), adds to the drama and excitement.

A CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE

The 8,000-seat amphitheatre, known as the Tribune, provides panoramic views of the massive stage, ensuring you’ll have a fantastic view of the action. The show’s combination of combat scenes, horsemanship, stunts, special effects and pyrotechnics delivers a truly cinematic experience that’s both family-friendly and awe-inspiring.
