SPANISH GALLEON ON THE TYNE

A historic Spanish galleon has moored up in Newcastle for the first time, letting visitors explore this floating museum. The Galeon Andalucía is over 160ft long and is a beautiful replica of the ships used by Spanish explorers in the 17th to 19th centuries. Board the galleon and wander along its six decks, learning about the ship and Spanish naval history as you go. This experience is the perfect family-friendly activity for summer, transporting you back in time to life on the treacherous ocean.

ARMED FORCES DAY

Pay tribute to past and present Armed Forces personnel at this special celebration in Darlington’s Market Square. The event will feature a Raising the Flag ceremony led by the Mayor of Darlington, a parade of representatives from the Armed Forces and civic guests, and the sounding of the last post while wreaths are placed on a commemorative stone. The event is open to everyone, so come along and show your appreciation for the service and sacrifices made by the Armed Forces.

COASTAL CRAWL 2024
When: Friday 28th June, 6.00pm – 9.00pm
Where: Spanish City Plaza
Price: From £20.00 (for Maggie’s cancer charity)
Take part in this 6km walk to raise money for Maggie’s at the Freeman Hospital – a charity that supports people with cancer and their family and friends. The meeting point is Spanish City in Whitley Bay, where there will be live music, t-shirts and signs to get you in the walking mood. From there, you’ll continue along the coast towards North Shields, stopping halfway for a moment of reflection at St George’s Church, Cullercoats. The walk will finish at North Shields Fish Quay, where you’ll be greeted with medals, photos and complimentary pizza! It’s a fun way to get your steps in while supporting a fantastic cause.

PERCY TENANTRY VOLUNTEERS

See the impressive Percy Tenantry Volunteers in action this weekend. You’ll have a chance to watch live drill sessions, handle objects and hear more about this voluntary army, which was set up over 200 years ago by the 2nd Duke of Northumberland. There will also be hourly musket firings, giving you an idea of what a battlefield would have sounded like.

DARLINGTON COMMUNITY CARNIVAL

Enjoy the summer vibes at this annual community festival in the park. There’ll be a feel-good opening procession, live music, food stalls and family entertainment to keep everyone happy. Local schools and groups have also been creating some wonderful nature-inspired creations in line with the theme ‘British Wildlife’, which you’ll be able to admire throughout the day.

LIVE WELL WITH CANCER: THE SELF CARE PLACE

Where: Jasmine Yoga, Tynemouth

This free yoga event organised by North Shields charity ‘Live Well With Cancer’ provides a place of comfort and ease for anyone impacted by cancer, including those with a diagnosis, loved ones, carers and oncology staff. Yogi Steph will lead the 2-hour relaxation session, which will involve gentle movement, easing tension and exploring restful shapes for the nervous system. Props will be provided so that you can get as comfortable as possible while practising breathwork and mindfulness. Let your body and mind find peace as you look out at views of the sea and sky, and enjoy a warm drink and homemade treat afterwards while watching the evening sun.

NEW YORK MINIMALISM

Royal Northern Sinfonia will be bringing ’70s and ’80s New York to Wylam Brewery’s Great Hall.
