North East concerts to fall in love with classical music in 2024

Thanks to Hans Zimmer, TikTok and video games, classical music is making a comeback with Gen-Z and Millennial audiences and we are here for it.
Stats show that nearly a third of current classical music listeners are under 35 – largely starting as an appreciation for soundtracks of their favourite films before discovering new up-and-coming artists like Lang Lang – a classical pianist who has amassed almost 300,000 followers on TikTok.
We asked Fraser Anderson, Executive Director at The Glasshouse, for his thoughts on the changing demographic. He said:
“Since the pandemic we’ve seen more and more younger people coming along to our classical concerts, many for the first time. People tell us they’re interested in trying something new. And after they do, many say coming along to a concert by our orchestra Royal Northern Sinfonia is a fantastic night out.
“Today, everyone has access to a whole new world of classical music through streaming platforms, and some have even told us they take a chance on unknown classical vinyl in thrift shops from 99p.
“If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to hear an orchestra live, and you’re under 30, take a look at The Glasshouse’s Bar 10 scheme. You can come to loads of orchestra concerts, enjoy a beer or soft drink, and travel for free on the Metro, all for £10.”
Fancy trying it? Here are our picks of the classical concerts we don’t want to miss this year.
