What to explore: Chesters Roman Fort, located near the village of Chollerford, is the perfect spot for couples seeking a romantic getaway. This well-preserved Roman cavalry fort offers beautiful views of the Tyne Valley, with an intimate atmosphere perfect for exploring together.

For families: Housesteads Roman Fort

What to explore: Housesteads Roman Fort, located near Bardon Mill, is a great spot for families. It’s the most complete Roman fort in Britain, offering fascinating ruins, a well-curated museum and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside – ensuring a fun, educational and engaging experience for all ages.

Where to stay: Hadrian’s Wall Campsite is an award-winning campsite that’s super-friendly and perfect for a family break (they’re dog-friendly too). They have spots for tents, motorhomes and caravans, as well as on-site glamping in the form of Shepherd’s Huts and a large bell tent which can each fit a family of four.

Grab lunch at: Once Brewed Coffee and Bakehouse at the nearby Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre, has an excellent menu of locally sourced food and drinks; using ingredients and products inspired by Northumberland National Park. Plus, it has great views overlooking the Northumberland hills.

Dog-Friendly: Corbridge Roman Town

What to explore: Corbridge Roman Town, is a fascinating time capsule of Roman life. Corbridge was once a bustling town where Romans and civilians would pick up provisions and today you can still walk through the town’s streets and discover artefacts in the Corbridge Hoard museum on site.

Where to stay: The Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland is just a 22-minute drive from Corbridge Roman Town and is one not to miss if you’re in the area as it’s considered one of the best places to stay in Northumberland. Grab lunch at: Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop off at The Duke of Wellington in Stocksfield to try its award-winning pub grub. What to explore: Vindolanda, near Hexham, is ideal for larger groups. This active archaeological site features extensive Roman ruins, ongoing excavations, and an impressive museum. The site’s size and variety of attractions ensure there’s something for everyone.
