These are the 13 new openings in the North East worth checking out
isla by Coarse
53 North Road, Durham, DH1 4SF
Brunch and small plates from the creators of the much-loved restaurant Coarse in Durham. We’ve got our eyes on the Brunch Sharing Board, Giant Crumpet with Nduja and the Ham, Egg & Chips from the brunch menu. The small plates all look equally delish, created from fresh, seasonal ingredients. We can’t wait to try it.
Lagom Speciality Coffee Bar
8 Monk Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 5XD
A cool concept coffee bar has opened in Newcastle’s Grainger Town. Lagom Coffee will be rotating a selection of four global coffees, ethically sourced from coffee-growing regions around the world. They’re aiming to bring together fellow coffee lovers as well as offering educational sessions for those who want to learn more.
Soufflé Baby
85 Westgate Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 4AE
We can confirm that there have been queues out of the door since this long-awaited pancake shop on Westgate Road opened its doors at the end of June. Bringing Japanese soufflé pancakes to Newcastle, they’re open 12noon – 9pm every day. Most of the pancakes are £10.00 with a couple priced at £11.00 – they also have ice cream, bubble tea and coffee. A great one for those with dietary allergies as the pancakes are gluten and lactose-free (toppings vary).
Tide
22 North Terrace, Seaham, SR7 7EU
Seaham’s newest dining experience is Tide. Right on the seafront, everything from the décor to the menu has been carefully thought through. The chefs have created a menu were almost everything will be made locally – and it looks insane. There’s obviously a focus on fish dishes and the Fish Kiev and Monkfish Shawarma are top of our list to try.
Tynemouth Telephone Box Café
71 Front Street, Tynemouth, NE30 4BP
Anyone on Instagram will likely have spotted the UK’s smallest ice cream café that has recently opened from the iconic red telephone box on Tynemouth Front Street. Like Mary Poppins, owner Jonathan has managed to squeeze a soft-serve ice cream, coffee machine, water tank, fridge and sink into the tiny space. It looks, delish – definitely one to check out over summer.
Project
133 Park View, Whitley Bay, NE26 3RG
Is there a more perfect combo than pizza and wine? Project is the brainchild of four friends who wanted to bring a memorable holiday in Tuscany back to their hometown of Whitley Bay. Serving up fresh Neapolitan-style pizza with a fun and diverse range of toppings, as well as a range of small plates, it’s the perfect date night or catch-up-with-friends vibe.
The Pans
38 Beresford Road, Seaton Sluice, NE26 4RQ
The coastal village of Seaton Sluice may be best known for its celebrated fish & chip shop, but there’s a new restaurant on the block that is already garnering five-star reviews. The Sunday lunches look delish and we’ve got it on good authority that the breakfasts are worth a visit – beach walk followed by a Full English? Sold.
Olive Coffee Co
16 Mistletoe Road, Jesmond, NE2 2DX
This bangin’ coffee shop was previously on Newcastle Quayside and not-so-secretly we’re very happy it’s moved to Jesmond – inside Lishmans Barber Shop on Mistletoe Road to be precise. It’s dog-friendly, human-friendly, and alongside great coffee (using Bubblehead Barista coffee and Minor Figures milk) they’ve got a delicious range of cakes and snacks too.
LollaMac
13 St Mary’s Chare, Hexham, NE46 1NQ
We’ve loved this handcrafted sterling silver and mixed metal jewellery business for years, so we were super excited to hear that LollaMac is moving to new premises in Hexham. The new location will be an open studio where visitors can see the jewellery making process in action. There’ll also be a dedicated area for hands-on jewellery-making workshops as well as a boutique shop area, allowing visitors to browse and purchase from the entire LollaMac collection, where each piece has been intricately handcrafted on the premises.
Józef’s Riverside Bar and Restaurant
Frankland Lane, Durham, DH1 5TA
Situated right on the river in Durham, Józef’s offers dining, drinks and live music. Named after a Polish dwarf who found sanctuary in Durham, memoirs describe Count Józef as a skilled musician which is why live music is high on the agenda at this new venue. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks – it also has great outdoor seating for when the sun is shining.
