Food, furnishings and fun: 11 new openings in Darlington

It’s all happening in the historic market town of Darlington.
Recently recognised as one of the top UK independent high streets by Holly Tucker, founder of Not On The High Street, it’s about time we visited Darlington to see what all the fuss is about.
From quirky homeware shops selling one-of-a-kind items to street food stalls serving up something new, there are plenty of new openings popping up on every corner of Darlo.

FOOD
Posh Street Food, Skinnergate
Founded by the critically acclaimed Master Chef Matei Baran, indulge in a range of tantalising dishes including breakfast, flatbreads, loaded fries, steaks, Sunday lunch, and desserts. Don’t miss their best-selling flatbreads like belly pork, steak and chicken tikka. We can’t wait to try their Sunday lunch, served in homemade Yorkshire pudding.
TERRA at Rockcliffe Hall, Hurworth-on-Tees
James Close opened a summer residency at Rockliffe Hall last month, having recently taken over its culinary direction. Last month, the Two Michelin star chef launched modern bistro restaurant TERRA, offering an ingredient-led menu and a relaxed dining experience. It features the best of land and sea, from near and far. We can’t wait to try it!
DRINK
The Hummingbird, Blackwellgate
The Hummingbird cocktail bar is opening soon in Darlington at the former Hoskins site on Blackwellgate. They’re currently refurbishing the place with contemporary décor, a new sound system and lighting equipment perfect for dancing the night away. Plus, there will be a stage for live music performances.
Viking Coffee North East, East Row
Viking Coffee North East is a new coffee hatch, perfect to pop by if you’re walking the dog, on your commute or if you’re just passing by. They offer everything from classic espresso and americano to speciality drinks like chai, matcha and even Turkish coffee. Don’t miss their unique beetroot latte that’s on trend RN.

Hyve Stocks, Blackwellgate
Hyve Stocks, a homeware and gift shop, opened earlier this year in an iconic building in Darlington. They focus on small-batch, sustainable products from small businesses, and they update their stock every few weeks. So, on every visit, you’ll find something new and exciting.
So Unique, Queen Street and Northgate
Guess what? So Unique has moved from Post House Wynd to a new spot at the corner of Queen Street and Northgate. They offer a wide range of household furnishings and unique pieces, perfect for making your home truly one-of-a-kind.
FUN
Hopetown Darlington, McNay Street
This new visitor attraction celebrating Darlington’s railway heritage opens this month after a £35m renovation. It will be key in the 2025 Stockton and Darlington Railway bicentenary celebrations. With up to 300,000 visitors expected annually, the site features a café, interactive experiences (including a time travelling experience), a LEGO transport exhibition, and a new steam engine build.

Haus of Bratwurste
This dine-in venue and street food spot is your go-to for Eastern European cuisine, German beers, and of course, mouthwatering Bratwurst and pretzels. Whether you’re craving hearty meals or a casual snack, they’ve got the flavours to satisfy your cravings.
Beaded Treasure
Get ready to discover a hidden gem. This jewellery shop is opening soon, showcasing handmade pieces across five unique categories: retro, vintage, mid-century, classic, and modern. Whether you’re into timeless elegance or bold statements, there’s something here for every style.
Haus of Moss
Haus of Moss is gearing up to open soon, offering a variety of blooming gorgeous floristry options. From stunning hand-tied bouquets to bridal flowers, wedding arrangements, funeral tributes, and commercial floral designs, they’ve got you covered for every occasion.
Marketplace Fish and Chips
Marketplace Fish and Chips is opening soon at the old fishmonger’s stall. Besides serving delicious, fresh-cooked fish and chips, they’ll also sell wet fish for you to cook at home. It’s a traditional street food option you won’t want to miss.
