Date night incoming: We’ve found the most romantic restaurant overlooking Newcastle

Sleek décor, dim lighting, sophisticated cocktails and panoramic views watching the sunset over the River Tyne… if you’re looking for the most romantic date night restaurant near Newcastle, we’ve got you.

You’re probably familiar with SIX Rooftop. Perched atop the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, it’s been an iconic restaurant on the North East foodie scene for 15 years now.

But this year, it’s had a serious glow-up, pushing it back up to the top of the North East’s best restaurants. And that’s not just our opinion – earlier this year SIX Rooftop was added to the Michelin Guide and gained two AA Rosettes. Pretty impressive.

Whilst we’re spoilt for choice for restaurants in and around Newcastle, there aren’t that many places to enjoy a dressed up, sultry date night. But SIX Rooftop is perfect for that, which is why we’ve crowned it the most romantic restaurant if you want an extra special evening.

DATE NIGHT IN THE CLOUDS AT SIX ROOFTOP

THE SETTING

There’s a reason the renovation reveal gained over 200,000 views on HLN’s Instagram – it’s seriously impressive.

There’s now a dedicated bar area, a cosy viewing bar (this is our favourite for date night), as well as an exclusive Chef’s Table.

The furnishings are now all dark wood and marble, with an impressive new bar and green foliage everywhere.

But the bit that can’t be rivalled? The views. This is a date night in the clouds, with panoramic views across Newcastle from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

HLN TOP TIP: Aim to head there about an hour before sunset to catch the most incredible golden skies.

THE COCKTAILS

In our opinion, no date night is complete without a cocktail – (negroni, please).

The cocktail menu at SIX Rooftop is as impressive as its food. Guests can enjoy a variety of innovative cocktails, each expertly mixed and presented. So, whether you prefer a classic drink or something more adventurous, the bartenders are ready to impress.

We love how the list features a mix of ingredients from high-quality local suppliers, including Ad Gefrin in Northumberland.

HLN’s top date night cocktails:

The Yorkshire Lady – Dutch Barn Yorkshire Vodka, Aperol, Honey Syrup, Lemon Juice, Prosecco

The Wooler Manhattan – Tácnbora Whisky, Martini Rosso, Angostura Bitters, Maraschino Cherry

Sour ‘SIX’ – Tácnbora Whisky, Lemon Juice, Whipped Red Wine

Marzipan Old Fashioned – Amaretto, Courvoisier VSOP, Orgeat Syrup, Angostura Bitters

They also have a great wine list featuring Bolney Estate English Sparkling Wine.

THE FOOD

What we love about SIX Rooftop is its accessible fine dining approach – you can enjoy a Michelin-approved tasting menu in gorgeous surroundings, without the hefty price tag.

The Taste of SIX tasting menu is £59.00 for six courses or £89.00 for nine courses.

Or if you fancy a lunch date, it’s £49.00 for six courses or £79.00 for nine courses.

The menu takes diners on a culinary journey through a series of modern British dishes crafted from sustainable, locally sourced ingredients.

Our favourite dishes are the Lindisfarne oyster, the hand-dived scallop and herb-fed chicken with einkorn and sweetcorn porridge (you’ll be thinking about it for weeks after).

They also have an equally impressive plant-based menu featuring innovatively prepared courses where it’s almost impossible to believe that vegetables could taste so incredible.

You can also choose to complement the dishes with a wine flight (from £40pp extra) or a ‘soft drinks flight’ (£24.00pp extra), where the team have expertly chosen the best drinks to pair with the menu.

Fancy the best seat in the house? Watch your tasting menu being prepared in the theatre of the kitchen at the Chef’s Table for an extra £10.00pp (only available for the nine-course menu).
