Saltmoore is the new wellness-led hotel opening you want on your radar. Here’s why
With breathtaking seascapes, unspoilt coastlines and cobbled streets, the picturesque town of Whitby and the quaint village of Sandsend, in North Yorkshire, are known by many as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Yorkshire Coast.
As of October 2024, the ‘jewel in the crown’ will become even more coveted with a new and luxurious wellness-led retreat, Saltmoore.
Previously known as Raithwaite Sandsend, Saltmoore will comprise two brand-new hotels, a state-of-the-art spa, gym, wellness cafe and brasserie, with a fine-dining restaurant opening next spring.
Saltmoore is the brainchild of powerhouse construction and property development firms O’Shea Group and Galliard Homes. Saltmoore marks their 50th project together and the first hotel in Northern England.
The Hotel
Saltmoore will have two brand-new hotels with 72 rooms in total. Both hotels will offer guests uncompromised luxury at the stunning locations. Room rates start from £400 on the weekend and will be from £290 midweek at both Saltmoore House and The Beach House.
Saltmoore House (43 bedrooms)
Hidden away in 80 acres of verdant estate and local woodland, and just a short stroll from the sea, the heart of Saltmoore can be found at ‘Saltmoore House’, a sophisticated and elegant 43-bedroom hotel that sits in a commanding position overlooking pristine gardens and a charming orchard that is home to an abundance of plum and pear trees.
The historic hall takes notes from industrial mills and the Victorian era, weaving together rich tones and textures to create timeless, indulgent interiors inspired by the moors and sea. The hotel’s bedrooms are spacious, ranging from more cosy ‘Snug’ bedrooms to larger ‘Master’ bedrooms. For those who cherish the finer things in life, Saltmoore’s suites offer added indulgence.
The Beach House (29 bedrooms)
‘The Beach House’ is a charming 29-bedroom property, just a stone’s throw away from Saltmoore House, providing further laidback luxury and family-friendly accommodation. With access to all of Saltmoore House’s facilities, The Beach House will have its very own reception and bar, with plans for a pizza restaurant and pool in the future. Guests can also bring their four-legged friends, as this hotel has several pet-friendly bedrooms.
This coastal-inspired property features Coastal Classic Balcony bedrooms with views out to the local woodland or Coastal Classic Outdoor Bath bedrooms equipped with an outdoor tub.
Wellness
Saltmoore will be a holistic retreat, inviting guests to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life as they immerse themselves in a relaxing spa, ‘The Sanctuary at Saltmoore.’ The state-of-the-art spa will feature an indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, immersive cryo chamber and relaxation room.
There are six treatment rooms, including one double treatment room for couples and friends. Designed to support recovery, repair and balance, the Wildsmith Treatments on offer are inspired by the universal principle of circadian rhythm.
Guests will also be able to take part in a number of amazing activities focused on wellness and the natural surroundings, including cycling, kayaking, cold water swimming, stargazing, picturesque picnics, yoga and sound therapy.
The Sanctuary at Saltmoore is a wellness haven for those truly looking to unwind.
Drinking and dining
Overseeing Saltmoore’s entire culinary operations is talented Head Chef Adam Maddock. Honing his skills in some of the UK’s top Michelin-starred kitchens, Maddock will oversee the curation of menus across Saltmoore’s four dining establishments and three bars. Having grown up in Plymouth, Devon, and spent much of his former years in Cornwall, Adam specialises in delicious seafood and hearty game meat.
Leading the food and beverage offering across the estate, Maddock is working alongside Consulting Chef Tommy Banks, a multi-award-winning chef and one of the UK’s most innovative restaurateurs. Their vision will see guests enjoying farm-to-fork style cuisine with locally sourced produce, seasonal dishes, and traditional British cuisine with a twist.
Fine Dining
The formal dining room, Calluna, is set to open in 2025 and will represent Maddock’s and Banks’ dedication to elevated yet uncomplicated cuisine. Guests can expect an unparalleled dining experience with a hyper-seasonal menu inspired by the moors and coast.
Brasserie
Based within Saltmoore House, The Brasserie will offer laidback dining from breakfast through to dinner. Guests can expect high quality dishes which celebrate Yorkshire’s finest produce.
Wellness Café
Organically aligning with The Sanctuary at Saltmoore, the Wellness Café will focus on a holistic and elevated approach to health food with bone broths, seasonal salads, and smoothies.
