FRED’S is now open in Fenwick, offering supreme filled croissants (we’re talking lobster and truffle)

The lunchtime offering we didn’t know we needed has just opened in Fenwick Newcastle.

This week, Fenwick opened its brand-new restaurant concept, FRED’S, in its Newcastle store.

FRED’s is inspired by founding family member Fred Fenwick’s passion for French culture and the Belle Epoque era. FRED’s is a modern take on the Terrace Tea Room, which he opened at Fenwick Newcastle in 1911.

What to expect

Located in the East Atrium of Fenwick Newcastle’s lower ground floor, it serves up breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and post-shopping champagne.

Think flowering tea with viennoiserie, handmade in-store by the pâtissier chefs. But what we’re most excited about is FRED’s signature “supreme” filled-croissant sandwiches – the first of its kind in Newcastle – with fillings that include the classic “BLT” Beef, Lobster and Truffle. Yes. Please.

They also have salads, savoury light bites and an extensive drinks menu, offering a selection of smoothies, cocktails and champagne.

Elevated afternoon tea

If you fancy an elevated afternoon tea experience in the centre of Newcastle, this is one to try. A modern take on the quintessential English Afternoon Tea, FRED’s offering features a variety of sweet and savoury treats, from roast beef & horseradish mini-Yorkshire puddings to smoked salmon and brown butter Madeleines, each element has been carefully considered to add an element of the unexpected.

Mark Reid, Fenwick Restaurant Executive Chef explains – “When we curated the menu, we wanted to balance the old guard with the vanguard, to offer well-loved dishes in a surprising way and thought-provoking way. Our Supreme Croissants sit pride of place in our menu, offering something unique for Newcastle and representing a sense of style that the Fenwick family, including the cafe’s namesake, Fred, have pioneered since the brand’s inception.

While our tried-and-true staples, such as Fred’s Club sandwich and our Caesar salad, cater to loyal diners who can enjoy their favourite dishes in a new, stylish environment. When creating our Fred’s Afternoon Tea, we wanted it to feel familiar yet laced with surprises to delight our customers. Instead of smoked salmon sandwiches, a smoked salmon and brown butter Madeline – something you’ll only find at FRED’s at Fenwick.”

FRED’s will be open for walk-ins but accepts daily bookings for its Afternoon Tea.
