The Halston – Inside Carlisle’s culinary gem: sizzling grills, unique tapas and chic cocktails

  • Advertisement Feature

Afternoon tea with the family, cocktails with the girls and date night dinner – this hotel does it all.

The Halston is the place to eat and drink in Carlisle – whatever the occasion.

The hotel is home to award-winning apartments, a gym, and events and meeting spaces, but you don’t have to stay there to enjoy its lush surroundings.

Housed in one of the city’s most celebrated and impressive Edwardian buildings, you’ll find two bars and restaurants offering something for everyone.

Across the board, the focus is on fresh and local ingredients served alongside high-quality coffee and wine.

Book a table for brunch, lunch, dinner, afternoon tea or drinks, and we guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Penny Blue

Penny Blue describes itself as a ‘stylish and contemporary place to eat and drink’ and we couldn’t agree more.

Between their tapas offering on Tuesday and Thursday, their Sunday Roast and their lunchtime specials, there’s always a reason to go back.

We’re big lovers of small plates at HLN, so the Tapas Tuesday/Thursday offer of three plates for £20 really piqued our interest. Our tapas combo of dreams? Pan-fried Pichana Steak Slices with a Chipotle Dressed Salad, Burrata, Pecan and Pear Salad and Garlic Mushrooms on Toasted Brioche – our mouths are watering.

If a Sunday Roast is more your thing, then you’ll be pleased to see that Penny Blue boasts four different meat options and a nut roast for the veggies. Of course, the most important question when it comes to a Sunday Lunch menu is, do they have cauliflower cheese? We are pleased to report, they do…

HLN TOP TIP: Start your meal with the Brie Mousse, Pear & Apple Chutney and Sea Salt & Rosemary Straws from the nibbles menu – the ultimate amuse bouche.

Bartons Yard

For something a touch more casual, Barton’s Yard is The Halston’s in-house coffee bar, serving locally roasted Farrer’s tea and coffee, alongside breakfast, lunch and cocktails.

High Life North

It’s a cosy, dog-friendly spot, ideal for catching up with friends for lunch. We’ve looked over the menu and can confirm that the ultimate girl-lunch of Caesar Salad, chips, and a Diet Coke is available.

For special occasions, Barton’s Yard prides itself on its afternoon tea. We’re obsessed with the ‘free flow’ option, which includes a full afternoon tea served with 90 minutes of free-flowing Prosecco.

You can choose from classic or vegetarian sandwiches and savouries, all served with a selection of sweet treats. Menu highlights include the Pea, Parmesan and Asparagus Soup bringing something a little bit different to the traditional afternoon tea, and we can’t stop thinking about the Raspberry and Pistachio Macaron.
