Get ready for some batty fun at WWT Washington Wetland Centre this September which the whole family will enjoy.

We’ve been waiting all year for WWT Washington Wetland Centre to announce their bat walk dates – and the time has finally come.

It gives us a chance to dive into the mysterious world of these incredible nocturnal creatures.

Bats are fascinating yet often misunderstood creatures and Washington Wetland Centre is offering a unique opportunity for us to learn all about them.

DISCOVER THE BATS OF WASHINGTON WETLAND CENTRE 

WWT Washington Wetland Centre is home to a variety of wild bat species, each with its own unique characteristics. During your visit, you might learn about the common and soprano pipistrelle, the largest UK bat – the noctule and the daubenton’s bat, known for skimming the water’s surface.

Whether you’re interested in hearing about WWT Washington’s bat conservation work or are looking to enjoy an evening of bat detecting, there’s plenty to discover.

BEER AND BAT NIGHT

When: Saturday 14th, Wednesday 18th , Sunday 22nd and Friday 27th September 2024

The adult-only bat walk is a perfect choice for adults looking for a unique evening out. Begin your night with a refreshing ale (or ginger ale) and a chat with the reserve team about British bat species and the conservation work at Washington Wetland Centre.

Afterwards, you’ll head out to explore the wetlands with a hand-held bat detector, searching for different species as they emerge at dusk.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY BAT WALKS

When: Tuesday 17th, Friday 20th, Tuesday 24th and Saturday 28th September 2024

Families are also welcome to join in on the fun with a series of family-friendly bat walks. The little ones can enjoy a hot chocolate or ‘Pip’ organic juice before the adventure begins.

The walks include a show-and-tell activity, where the team will share interesting facts about bats before heading out to explore Hollowood and the reservoir. With a bat detector, you’ll search for bats and see what other nocturnal creatures you can spot along the way.

WHAT TO BRING

Be sure to bring a torch and wear appropriate clothing and footwear, as the events take place in the evening. Tickets include after-hours admission to Washington Wetland Centre, but please note that you can’t explore the site before the walk begins.
