At Royal Grammar School (RGS) Newcastle, education goes far beyond the classroom.
The school believes in a holistic approach that nurtures not only academic success but also the personal development of every student.
A key part of this is RGS’s co-curricular program, offering students countless opportunities to explore new interests, develop skills and build lifelong friendships.
With a wide range of activities, RGS encourages every student to discover what excites and inspires them. There’s something for everyone, whether it’s music, sports, drama or something unique like e-sports or knitting.
A world of opportunities
At RGS, students can choose from over 170 co-curricular activities across the Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form. These range from traditional pursuits like sports, music, and drama to more niche interests such as Dungeons & Dragons, knitting, DJing, and electronic dance music (EDM).
The Fabricarium, a girls-only gaming design space and ArchSoc, a research-focused group using the school archive, highlight RGS’s commitment to providing activities that cater to all interests.
No matter what your child is passionate about, the staff ensure there’s a space for them to thrive at RGS.
Student voice and staff passion
The co-curricular program at RGS, is built around what students and staff enjoy. The staff actively seek feedback from students to ensure they’re offering activities they find engaging and inspiring. For example, thanks to student input, RGS’ music program now includes modern offerings like EDM.
Staff also bring their interests to life through the program. Teachers run clubs and activities they’re passionate about, from knitting to silver smithing, ensuring a rich variety of options. At RGS, it’s not just about what students do – it’s about embedding their core values of fairness, integrity, humility and leadership into every activity.
New and exciting activities on the horizon
RGS is always looking to expand and improve its co-curricular offerings. One of this term’s highlights was the Cultural Festival, a week-long celebration of food, music and performing arts from around the world. It was such a success that RGS is planning to make it even bigger this year.
RGS is also proud of its growing STEM offerings, which now include robotics, engineering, and programming, alongside traditional activities like sports, drama, music, the Combined Cadet Force, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Balancing academics with co-curricular fun
While it may seem tricky to balance schoolwork with so many exciting activities, RGS found that students who are active in co-curriculars often perform better academically. Being busy helps students manage their time, stay productive and avoid procrastination.
For students with particularly full schedules, such as student-athletes, RGS monitor their workload to ensure a healthy balance. The school works closely with parents and coaches to keep everything on track, making sure students are supported in both their academic and co-curricular commitments.
Recognition for participation
RGS values commitment and enthusiasm. Students who consistently participate in co-curricular activities can earn ‘full school colours,’ a prestigious recognition that celebrates their dedication. It’s an achievement they can carry with pride throughout their lives.
