Period pants are getting better and better

Despite writing about period pants for over a year, I’d never actually tried them until a couple of months ago…
Let me tell you, they’re a game-changer.
With price hikes in disposable period products and the soaring cost of living – combined with the overwhelming global issue of plastic waste build-up, switching to more sustainable period products had been on my agenda for a while.
But self-imposed myths around leaking and the efficacy of period underwear put me off for a while.
“The very concept of reusable period pants seems to throw us,” says Ruby Raut, CEO and co-founder of WUKA. “We’re all so conditioned to using plastic-riddled disposables that the idea of reusable, washable pants can be just too much for us to wrap our heads around. But here’s the thing: it’s not too good to be true.
“In essence, period pants are simply pants that wick away your period whilst you’re free to get on with your day, just as if you weren’t on your period. And in the long term, they also work out cheaper than their disposable counterparts. They really are a win-win alternative.”
PERIOD PANTS – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
How do I wash period pants?
Caring for your period pants isn’t much different to looking after any other underwear – simply rinse in the sink or shower, pop in the washing machine at 30 degrees with your usual laundry detergent and air dry. Try to avoid using fabric softener and tumble drying as, over time, this can impact the product’s absorbency.
What if I have a really heavy flow?
Just like traditional period products, period pants are made to cater to all flows – even super heavy flows. Period pants with a super heavy absorbency hold 60ml of blood, which is the equivalent of 12 regular tampons or eight pads worth. A super heavy pair is also great for wearing whilst sleeping or travelling, as it truly means one less thing to worry about.
Will I feel like I’m wearing granny pants?
Absolutely not. There are so many different styles of period pants: briefs, high-waisted, boxers and even thongs. None feel frumpy, and regardless of absorbency, they don’t feel bulky. Go with the styles you’re used to wearing, and you’ll barely notice the difference.
