WIN: It is Christmas, after all. HLN and NGI are giving you the chance to win an all-expenses paid weekend in Newcastle before Christmas. Including a luxurious stay at Hotel du Vin, a chef’s tasting lunch at Dakwala Bombay Canteen, dinner at Dobson & Parnell and drinks at Mother Mercy. Head to our Instagram to enter. Good luck!
THE HOTELS TO BOOK
On the outskirts of Newcastle, in the suburb of Jesmond, Jesmond Dene House feels like a countryside escape, but it’s just a short 5-minute taxi ride into the city centre. The independent boutique hotel is housed in a historic building that’s been lovingly refurbished to a luxurious standard – think gorgeous grounds, a secret garden, large roaring fireplaces and spacious, quiet bedrooms. It’s the perfect choice for a refined winter stay.
Another stylish boutique option is Hotel du Vin, located on the banks of the River Tyne. Just a short walk from the Millennium Bridge and Sage Gateshead, it’s a great base to explore the vibrant Quayside. With 42 unique rooms, a French-British fusion bistro, and a great selection of fine wine, it offers a sophisticated base for your festive weekend.
Across the river, Hilton Newcastle Gateshead is a majestic, modern hotel, with views for days from the bar down the River Tyne and across the city (the sunsets here are gorg). If you manage to fit in some chill time, there’s an indoor pool, sauna and steam room on site.
Or, if you want to be in the heart of it all, Crowne Plaza couldn’t be handier, located just behind the railway station. There are 251 luxurious bedrooms and suites, as well as the Mineral House Spa on-site, with a gym, pool and treatments available. Plus, The Gin Bar is a great place to meet before heading out for the night.
WHAT TO DO
Christmas Markets
Newcastle city centre is filled with festive cheer at this time of year. Head to Monument and the Christmas Village at Old Eldon Square for some Christmas shopping at the Christmas Markets, where you can explore a range of independent makers – from craft cocktails to preserves, wreaths and unique decorations.
Grainger Market
When you need to refuel, head to nearby Grainger Market. This Grade I listed building has been part of Newcastle’s history since 1835 and is now home to a vibrant mix of traders. Stop by Tian’s Gifts to stock up on unique and beautiful Christmas cards before trying some of the street food with cuisines from around the world, including Snackwallah, Soju & Gogi, Acropolis, Street Food Sri Lanka and more…
Ouseburn Christmas Market
If you happen to have guests on the 7th and 8th of December, the Ouseburn Christmas Market is one not to miss. More than 70 local traders will be showcasing the best that the Toon has to offer, from handmade art, ceramics, prints, clothes, candles, homeware and more.
Northern Lights Newcastle
For a memorable Christmas experience, head to Northern Lights Newcastle – an enchanting light trail at Leazes Park with incredible illuminations. Expect a jaw-dropping journey while enjoying several cosy pit stops along the way, popular vintage fairground rides and a Christmas Village brimming with artisan food and drink. Tickets are already selling super-fast, so we recommend booking asap.
Christmas Crafts
For those who like hands-on activities, one of Newcastle’s most iconic restaurants, Blackfriars, has a whole host of Christmas activities from Christmas bread making, gingerbread house making and behind-the-scenes tours of its 13th Century home. Or head to the Centre for Life to learn how to needle felt your own festive robin while enjoying a drink and an impressive view of Life’s glowing Gaia model.
Films and shows
If sitting back and relaxing is more your vibe, Newcastle Castle is hosting Christmas film screenings, with festive classics like Elf and The Muppet Christmas Carol shown in the most atmospheric venue.
Or head to the panto at Newcastle Theatre Royal, where this year, Geordie legends Danny Adams and Joe McElderry star in a theatrical extravaganza, The Little Mermaid.
EAT & DRINK
Take time to relax, catching up over a festive afternoon tea at The Vermont Hotel. Choose from the luxurious lounge of The Maven restaurant with views across Newcastle and Gateshead.
For dinner, award-winning Dobson & Parnell offers casual fine dining on Newcastle’s Quayside. Expect a blend of British and European cuisine, with ever-changing menus to reflect seasonal produce.
Or if you fancy something a little more spicy, Dakwala Bombay Canteen is a new addition to Newcastle’s foodie scene this year, and is one not to miss. Taking inspiration from Mumbai’s traditional Khanawal eateries, Dakwala is a celebration of Bombay’s rich culinary heritage. Think Pani Puri snacks, Bombay Burgers and the signature Dak House Chicken (a creamy chicken masala). There’s also a great chef’s tasting menu if you want to try something new.
And finally, no trip would be complete without a few cocktails, and Mother Mercy has our heart. The OG basement bar at Cloth Market was voted one of the top 50 cocktail bars in the UK, and serves up some of the best cocktails in Newcastle alongside hip-hop beats – well worth a visit.
They’ve now opened two more sites in Newcastle – a glamourous shopping pit-stop in Fenwick department store and the super cool Café Mercy (the St Germain snow cone cocktails are a must-try).
