This winter, prepare to be captivated as Scottish Ballet’s magical production of The Nutcracker makes its eagerly awaited return to Newcastle Theatre Royal.

Last seen in Newcastle in 2022, this beloved classic is back and brighter than ever with refreshed choreography, sparkling new touches and vibrant elements that promise to delight audiences from Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th February 2025.

Whether you’re a lifelong ballet lover or discovering the magic for the first time, this is an unmissable experience at Newcastle Theatre Royal next year.

P.S. Now’s the perfect time to drop hints for a Christmas gift or how about treating your loved one to making memories together instead of traditional presents?

A FESTIVE FAVOURITE RETURNS

No one likes it when all the festivities are over, so why not carry the magic into February with The Nutcracker? With lavish sets, dazzling costumes and Tchaikovsky’s iconic score played live by the full Scottish Ballet Orchestra, this production promises to sweep you off your feet into a winter wonderland.

NEW TWISTS ON A CLASSIC TALE

This season marks the 10th anniversary of Scottish Ballet’s adaptation of The Nutcracker and artistic director Christopher Hampson is pulling out all the stops. Drawing inspiration from the original choreography by Scottish Ballet founder Peter Darrell, Christoper has infused new life into beloved scenes like the party, the snowflakes and the iconic waltz of the flowers.

But that’s not all – four newly choreographed moments in the Land of Sweets add a fresh dimension to this timeless classic. Talented in-house choreographers and dancers are bringing their own flair to each scene.

Dancer, Sophie Laplane, brings energy to the ‘Russian’ dance, while associate choreographer Nicholas Shoesmith revitalises the ‘English’ dance and the dramatic battle scene. Soloist Javier Andreu brings his artistry to the ‘Spanish’ dance and principal Jessica Fyfe infuses elegance into the ‘French’ sequence. Plus, you’ll once again enjoy the exquisite ‘Chinese’ dance, choreographed by Annie Au and introduced in 2021.

A JOURNEY THROUGH IMAGINATION

The story follows young Clara, who goes on a fantastical journey after drifting off to sleep on Christmas Eve. Alongside the Nutcracker Prince, she battles the formidable Rat King, dances with snowflakes in the Land of Ice and Snow and finally arrives at the enchanting Land of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy awaits.

Every moment is a visual feast, from the shimmering sets to the intricately designed costumes that look like they came straight out of a fairytale.

ALL AGES CAN EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC

Whether you’re introducing your little ones to their first ballet or revisiting a cherished classic, The Nutcracker offers something for everyone. The stunning performances, live music and captivating story combine to create a magical experience that transcends generations.
