December can make getting your steps in a bit tricky with all the cold winter weather, but why not blow those cobwebs away and have some festive fun while doing so?
We’ve got you covered with four fantastic walking routes, perfect for all ages and abilities, and close to nearby Christmas events in the North East.
From riverside paths to countryside strolls and city-centre Christmas light trails, there’s something for everyone.

RIVERSIDE STROLL AND FESTIVE MARKET DAY IN HEXHAM

Start your perfect festive day with an easy, scenic walk along the Hexham River Tyne Path. Beginning at Hexham Railway Station (easily accessed by public transport), this peaceful looped route – turning back at A69 – offers stunning river views and suits all fitness levels, bringing you back to your starting point.

Once refreshed, head to Hexham’s Christmas Market on Saturday 14th December. Wander through the outdoor stalls at Hexham Abbey filled with unique gifts and festive decorations. Explore Hexham Farmers’ Market and browse the Abbey’s Christmas Fair. After shopping, warm up in one of Hexham’s cosy cafés or restaurants.
CAUSEY ARCH CIRCULAR WITH A CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON TEA

Enjoy a festive day out with the scenic Beamish Park and Causey Arch Circular walk near Stanley, County Durham. Starting in the quaint village of Causey, this moderately challenging trail takes you through picturesque farm tracks, woodland in Beamish Park and beautiful countryside. The highlight? The stunning Causey Arch, Britain’s oldest single-arch railway bridge, is set above a beautiful gorge. Some paths can get muddy, so sturdy boots are a must.

After, refuel at the South Causey Inn’s festive afternoon tea, complete with turkey sandwiches, Christmas cakes and scones. Meet Santa, enjoy a welcome drink and soak in all the Christmas cheer. Your little ones can join in the festive fun too with a kids afternoon tea menu.

WINTER WONDERLAND AND WALKS

Enjoy a refreshing circular walk around Rainton Meadows, an easy route perfect for all ages. Stroll past serene ponds, through peaceful pastures and winter woodlands, ending at the charming Joe’s Pond. Grab a cosy drink at The Meadows Coffee Shop before or after your walk.

After you’ve got your steps in, dive into festive fun at Winter Wonderland. Until New Year’s Eve, enjoy ice skating, Santa’s Grotto, a Naughty Elf Trail, a festive fairground, tasty food and even a Christmas panto. Perfect for families and friends to make magical memories.
