Ever dreamt of staying in a 19th-century mansion? That’s exactly what we experienced at the Elmbank Hotel, York, last weekend.

From the moment my husband and I arrived, we were blown away by the interior and architecture of this stunning hotel.

Tucked away just 15 minutes from the city centre, this boutique hotel, part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, perfectly blends enchanting historic Art Nouveau grandeur with modern luxury.

Here’s my review of our stay absolute hidden gem hotel in York…

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

When we arrived, the stunning architecture of the Grade II-listed mansion immediately caught our attention. The double-door entrance, complete with intricate stained glass, offered a glimpse of the elegance that awaited inside. Despite the frosty -1°C temperatures outside, we were given a warm Yorkshire welcome by the friendly reception staff and greeted with the wholesome glow of the open fireplace – a cosy start to our stay.

Walking through Elmbank Hotel, York, felt like stepping into a modern, vibrant art gallery. At every turn, we discovered new Art Nouveau treasures, from floral murals to elegant stencils and a beautiful wooden staircase to stained-glass feature windows in the foyer. Intricate details like handcrafted GOLEM tiles and bespoke feather-patterned carpets added colour and unique character.

LOCATION: CLOSE YET TRANQUIL

Located near the Knavesmire Strays, the Elmbank Hotel, York, has the perfect balance of tranquillity and convenience. It feels like a peaceful escape just a 15-minute walk from York’s bustling city centre. If walking isn’t your thing (we don’t blame you in winter weather), the helpful reception staff can arrange a taxi or help with bus routes.

Despite being close to the city, the hotel’s surroundings felt serene and provided a much-needed relaxing retreat from York’s lively atmosphere.

THE ROOM: LUXURIOUS COMFORT

We stayed in the King George Walton Deluxe room, which was stunning. The elegant design, inspired by George Walton’s work, felt sophisticated yet cosy and inviting.

As a bath lover, the roll-top bath was a highlight – a perfect spot to unwind with a proper brew of Yorkshire Tea (of course) topped off with luxurious toiletries. The ensuite bathroom featured statement peacock-themed GOLEM tiles, adding a unique glamourous touch.

The room had everything we needed, from a Nespresso machine to a flatscreen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi and thoughtful details like fresh, beautifully scented towels and bedding. The plush mattress was incredibly comfortable – we just sank into it. It was so comfy that getting up the next morning was a challenge.

DRINKS AND DINING

Our dinner at Leetham’s Brasserie was exceptional. The restaurant’s romantic and intimate atmosphere, with stained-glass windows, mood lighting and floral murals is THE perfect setting for a meal.

We started with pea and mint soup, served with homemade crispy bread – so hearty for a winter’s evening. For mains, my husband went for the steak and ale pie with creamy mash and gravy, while I chose a fragrant green Thai curry with prawn crackers. Both dishes were delicious.

For dessert, my husband ordered the sticky toffee pudding – I had to ask for another spoon to steal some as it looked too good to miss. Watching a neighbouring table indulge in the York Gin Afternoon Tea tempted us to come back to try it. More info here.

After dinner, we couldn’t resist visiting the Peacock Bar, an elegant space for sipping cocktails. Sinking into a comfy sofa with a Yorkshire Gin cocktail in hand, surrounded by Art Nouveau treasures and another open fire, was the perfect way to round off our evening.
