If you’re new to the North East, you’re in for a treat – our region’s convenient bus routes make it so easy to explore the best hotspots without the hassle of driving or parking, all while keeping your journey eco-friendly.
The best part? If you’re 21 years old or under you can buy any single bus ticket for just £1 or buy a £3 unlimited day ticket to get around County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear on bus, Ferry and Metro.
Whether you’re a beach lover, a history fan or just looking for the next Insta-worthy spot, this guide has you covered with bus routes to explore the best of the North East.



HADRIAN’S WALL, NORTHUMBERLAND
Getting there: 684 Tynedale Links (Eldon Square, Newcastle) then AD122 (Hexham Railway Station)
Hadrian’s Wall is a legendary Roman site stretching from Newcastle to Carlisle. Explore forts, milecastles and ancient settlements along this fascinating trail. Don’t miss The Sill Circular trail as part of the new Reiver Trials – perfect if you’re a history lover or fancy a refreshing relaxed walk.
After your walk we’re sure you’ll have worked up an appetite. On your bus journey home why not take advantage of your £3 day ticket and stop off at Cobridge to explore quirky shops, restaurants and bars? The Pele tower microbar is one of our faves.

ROKER, SUNDERLAND
Getting there: E1 (Fawcett Street, Sunderland)
Looking for a beach day without venturing too far? Hop on the bus to Roker’s golden sands and stunning lighthouse views are perfect for a chilled-out escape.
Brunch lovers, head straight to Love Lily for a feast that’ll fuel your day and for some dinner and a few cheeky beverages why not head to These Things Happen? As the sun sets, grab cocktails at one of Roker’s taprooms. Use your £3 day ticket to jump back on the bus to explore nearby Seaburn.


SEABURN
Getting there: E1 (Fawcett Street)
Speaking of Seaburn, STACK Seaburn is a must-visit. This lively shipping container village is packed with street food, bars and live entertainment. Grab Greek bites from Acropolis, bao buns from Bao Down, or duck treats from Holy Duck – perfect for a day of seaside eats and drinks.
Fancy a walk? Seaburn Beach is stunning. Hop back on the bus using your day ticket to Marsden for scenic trails and Instagram-worthy views, and don’t miss The Grotto, a unique cave restaurant and beach bar serving holiday vibes right by the sea.
RABY CASTLE, DEER PARK AND GARDENS, COUNTY DURHAM
Getting there: X21 Lines (Durham) then 85 (Barnard Castle)
Looking for a refreshing day out? Visit Raby Castle. With 200 acres of lush deer park, medieval architecture, stunning gardens and delicious eats at The Vinery, it’s the perfect countryside escape from city life. Hop on the bus home with your unlimited day ticket and enjoy the stunning scenery as you relax on the journey back.


ALNWICK CASTLE, NORTHUMBERLAND
Getting there: X15 (Newcastle Haymarket)
Potterheads, this one is for you – Alnwick Castle is a must-visit. After just under an hour bus journey from Newcastle, you can explore the magnificent castle grounds where Harry Potter was filmed, learn how to fly on a broomstick and enjoy lunch in the cosy Courtyard Café.
Stop by the charming market town to enjoy pub grub and drinks at Dirty Bottles, where you can also glimpse the famous cursed 18th-century bottles. With plenty of indie shops, delicious eateries and cosy pubs to explore, taking the bus is the perfect way to skip the argument over who’s stuck being the designated driver.
HOLY ISLAND (LINDISFARNE), NORTHUMBERLAND
Getting there: LNER train (Newcastle Central Station) then 477 (Berwick Railway Station)
Fancy a relaxing journey without the long car ride and want to save money on petrol? Hop on the bus to Holy Island which feels like straight out of a fairy tale.
Wander around the ancient priory ruins, visit the iconic Lindisfarne Castle, and don’t forget to grab some locally made Lindisfarne mead. If you’re into hidden gems, 793 Spirit & Soul’s cocktail bar is a must-visit.

TYNEMOUTH
Getting there: 306 (Newcastle Haymarket)
Tynemouth’s got everything you need for a fun weekend! Whether you’re into great food, quirky bars, or independent shops, it’s the place to be. Grab tapas at The Cove or visit Riley’s Fish Shack right on the beach with fire pits and deck chairs.
Take the bus from Newcastle (it’s always hard to find a space to park in Tynemouth) and check out the Tynemouth Market for vintage finds and tasty street food. Want something active? Try surfing at Tynemouth Surf Co, sunrise yoga at Jasmine Yoga, or go cold water swimming with Dip Club to sort out your hangover.
