During the day, Restuarant Pine offers a classic three-tiered afternoon tea with a refined, modern approach. In the evening, enjoy a generous tasting menu using ingredients foraged from the Northumberland countryside, or grown at its onsite kitchen garden.
A real North East gem, the decor is aimed to reflect the surroundings, with a warm, inviting, country feel throughout.
Wednesday – Saturday: Evening tasting menu only.
Saturday: Lunch tasting menu.
Tasting Menu – £165pp (£195pp for the Chef’s Table experience). Additional wine flights can be added for £95pp.
HJEM
Restaurant Hjem (pronounced “yem”) was Northumberland’s first Michelin-starred restaurant. With its gorgeous Scandinavian menu and country inn setting, this eatery is well worth a visit. It only has 24 seats, so make sure you make your reservation well in advance.
It’s part of The Hadrian Hotel, which is ideal so you can head upstairs to your room after all of that delicious food and wine.
The team serves a tasting menu created from ingredients sourced from the surrounding farms and gardens of Northumberland. The menu is between 15-18 servings, some of which are small bites, others are larger dishes – offering a really unique dining experience. All of the food is cooked with Scandinavian precision and techniques.
It’s retained its Michelin One Star award in the Michelin Guide 2025.
Tasting Menu – £165pp. Drinks pairing can be added for an additional £100pp.

MICHELIN RECOMMENDED RESTAURANTS IN THE NORTH EAST
SIX, NEWCASTLE
Fine dining in the clouds? Sign us up. Our friends at SIX are celebrating a new entry into the Michelin Guide 2024 following their recent refurbishment.
Praised for its ‘colourful dishes that are generous in both size and flavour’ from land, sea and plant, as well as the quality of their produce. It’s a firm HLN favourite.
The flagship tasting menu is available as either six-courses or nine-courses for both lunch and dinner. And if you fancy pushing the boat out, go for the best seat in the house – the chef’s table.
21, NEWCASTLE
The story of the restaurant starts in 1988, when chef Terry Laybourne opened the North East restaurant as 21 Queen Street – it was an exciting time for the city, and 21 quickly became one of the region’s best-loved fine dining establishments – a crown it still holds today. 21 has since relocated to Newcastle Quayside’s Trinity Gardens and still has a straightforward, flavour-first food philosophy that is unashamedly influenced by the French classics.
COOK HOUSE, OUSEBURN
This relaxed restaurant was set up by chef Anna Hedworth – originally a supper club housed in two converted shipping containers. She’s now opened Cook House, which she imagined as ‘the restaurant we’d all like to hang out.’ It offers casual, all-day dining, focused on food, but most of all a hospitable and convivial environment.
The new site has two floors, a dining terrace, shop and green kitchen garden. The kitchen is still at the heart of Cook House – sit in the upstairs dining room, and you can see the team of chefs work their magic, serving a seasonal, regularly changing menu. A real favourite in the region – and a great spot for lunch sitting on the terrace.
LOVAGE, JESMOND
Delicious food with laidback vibes – every dish at Lovage in Jesmond is a winner. Head Chef Kleo is Albanian and spent time in Italy before moving to the North East with his partner Lisa, who runs the front-of-house. Mediterranean flavours and vibrant colours inspire the seasonal menus. The dishes are designed for sharing – which is a great idea so you can try a bit of everything.
OSTERS, GOSFORTH
Retaining it’s place in the Michelin Guide for 2025 is the sister restaurant of Lovage – Osters on Gosforth High Street. For this restaurant, the attention is on seafood. The team is focused on quality ingredients cooked simply but with maximum flavour. The oysters are delicious (and always on the menu) alongside a great selection of fish, shellfish and meat for the carnivores.
DOBSON & PARNELL, NEWCASTLE
Tucked away on Newcastle Quayside, Dobson & Parnell is the sister restaurant of Newcastle’s much-loved Blackfriars restaurant. Dobson & Parnell’s team of chefs take traditional dishes and give them an update – Michelin Guide has praised the fish dishes, and we can vouch for how delicious the chicken dishes area. The cocktail menu is also particularly good.
REBEL, HEATON
We’re a huge fan of this small but perfectly formed restaurant in Heaton. Co-owners, Lindsay and Mike, spent over a decade working at restaurants including Michelin-starred House of Tides, Paul Rankins and Jesmond Dene House before deciding to start their own project to make fine dining more accessible. There’s no dress code here – it’s informal and relaxed, with bold flavours and creative dishes.
NEST, HEATON
Another relaxed and perfectly formed dining option in Heaton is Nest. The interesting menu is constantly changing and provides fun options that really work. They offer both lunch and dinner tasting menus, as well as a Sunday lunch that has proved super popular, so book well in advance. Great vibes and incredible food – what’s not to love?
COARSE, DURHAM
One of the hidden gems in Durham, Coarse, is tucked away in a cute courtyard in the city centre. The set menu changes seasonally and the Michelin Guide particularly praises the chefs for the quality of the sauces (say no more). They offer a three-course lunch menu (£27) and a six-course dinner menu (£49) which is incredible value for the quality, thanks to their mission to make tasting menus accessible and affordable.
FARU, DURHAM
This restaurant in Durham city centre offers five-course or 10-course tasting menus for both lunch and dinner, Wednesday to Saturday. Another relaxed option, Faru doesn’t set a dress code, instead opting for an informal setting where the food is the focus. The name Faru comes from Old English meaning ‘journey’, and the menu aims to take the diner on a culinary adventure from start to finish.
SONNET, ALNWICK
This new opening in 2024 has already earned a spot in the Michelin Guide 2025. A sonnet is a 14-line poem, and so the culinary poetry takes the form of 14 courses, each one crafted by Chef Gary McDermott. Described by the Michelin Guide as ‘a deeply personal restaurant’, many of the dishes come with a story attached and plenty of attention given to each of the eight tables. In an endearing touch that is typical of the place, dinner ends with ‘Elevenses’ for you to take home and enjoy the following morning.
THE FEATHERS INN, STOCKSFIELD
Not only recognised in the Michelin Guide 2024, but The Feathers Inn was highly acclaimed by Jamie Oliver Magazine, which said: ‘If you only eat at one place in Northumberland, make it here’. High praise indeed. The Feathers Inn is a small pub with a big heart. As well as offering delicious food, they also have great events regularly with pop-up taquerias and more, so keep an eye on the website for details.
THE RAT INN, HEXHAM
Set in the small hamlet of Anick, Hexham, The Rat Inn is a traditional pub taken over by current owners Phil and Karen in 2007. Since then, it has earned a well-deserved reputation for its locally sourced, award-winning food. They allow small well-behaved dogs, but it must be arranged in advance as part of the booking.
BIB GOURMAND RESTAURANTS IN THE NORTH EAST
HAVELI, PONTELAND
Kicking off the first of the Bib Gourmand restaurants, Haveli offers a large selection of top-quality Indian cuisine that is also a great value for money. Michelin has praised the experience provided by members of staff in the restaurant, who combine personality and professionalism to perfection. Great for a special occasion.
BROAD CHARE, NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE
Praised by the Michelin Guide for its good quality, good value food, Broad Chare serves delicious bar snacks and a wide-ranging menu with dishes that pack a punch. Not only that, but beer and real ale lovers will be kept happy with a menu offering over 50 options. A great spot for a foodie-approved Sunday lunch.
